Middlesex return to Radlett tomorrow (Friday) for the first time in two years when they take on Kent Spitfires in the Royal London One Day Cup.

And it could be a taste of things to come with the men from Lord’s confirming they are looking at playing some of their four-day county championship matches at the Hertfordshire ground in the future.

Tomorrow's match will be the first time that Middlesex have played a first eleven fixture at Radlett since they beat Yorkshire by six wickets in the Yorkshire Bank 40 two years ago.

That match was heralded as being the start of a partnership between Radlett and Middlesex, with the county side expected to make Cobden Hill their second home when their Lord’s HQ was otherwise booked, but although Middlesex’s second team play there the first team have not returned until now.

Middlesex spokesman Steven Fletcher told the Watford Observer: “The reason we’ve not played at Radlett since is because we played all four of our Royal London One Day Cup home matches at Lord’s last season, and whilst we played some T20 Blast matches at outgrounds, Radlett isn’t considered big enough to play T20 there as it would struggle to accommodate the 3,000 crowds we get for T20’s at outgrounds such at Richmond and Uxbridge.

“Moving forward, the square has had some wickets re-laid last year to first-class specification, so we’re hopeful of being able to play four day County Championship cricket there in the future and to continue to use the ground for List-A One-Day matches, like the Kent one next week.”

On their one and only previous visit, former Radlett player Gareth Berg was part of the victorious Middlesex side and took one wicket for 29 runs. The all-rounder has since left the club for Hampshire leaving Watford-born Steven Finn as the only member of the squad with Hertfordshire links.

Play starts on Friday at 11am and tickets are priced at £20 adults.
