Watford Water Polo Club returned to the top of the Hertfordshire League last Sunday as they maintained their 100 per cent record with a home win over Hatfield.

The Hatters came to Woodside looking to avenge their defeat to Watford earlier in the campaign, but Watford had other ideas as they maintained their perfect opening to the campaign with a hard-fought 14-12 win.

The first quarter was level at 3-3 with Watford’s Jason Attwood hitting a double and Zoltan Agocs netting the other.

But by half time Watford had edged into a 7-6 lead with Gianluca Valle, with a brace, and Attwood sharing the scoring duties only for Hatfield to turn it round in the next play and level things up at ten-all going into the final quarter.

The hosts held their nerve though and a three-goal blast in as many minutes gave them a 13-10 lead before Hatfield hit back to narrow the lead to just one. Hatfield’s hopes of salvaging the game were killed off though by another Attwood goal late on.

The men’s second team continued the feel-good factor at the club when they won their away match at Avondale Seconds in London League Division Two.

Their 15-10 win was their fifth straight success and it moved them into second place, one point behind leaders Enfield who they face on August 12 after next week’s home match against Sutton and Cheam’s second string.
