The 1881 Movement will be bigger and better than ever this season, says Roy Moore, with the Watford fan group planning to ‘flood’ Vicarage Road with flags when the Hornets host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, August 15.

It was in the summer of 2013 that a small cluster of Golden Boys supporters came together to discuss how to improve the atmosphere inside Vicarage Road. The 1881 was born and it has gone from strength to strength ever since.

There are now around 1,500 members in the group, which was the brainchild of Moore, and both players and supporters alike have praised the impact they’ve made at home and away matches.

There will be no self-congratulatory pat on the back from the 1881, however, with Moore and the group only planning to build on their success now the Hornets are in the Premier League.

“We want things to be bigger and better than ever this season and there are more flags and more banners on the way,” he said.

“And for the opening home game we are planning to flood Vicarage Road with flags.

“It is obviously a massive season for the club and we want the support to be the best it can be. Right at the very start a lot of people were critical of what we were doing but there has been a complete turnaround. They have seen the impact that it has made and it has blown them away.

“Now people are emailing me telling me how great the 1881 is, which is amazing.

“Around 300 more people have requested to move to our area of the stadium as well for this season. We are going to be taking on some of the best clubs in the country but hopefully we’ll have the best support.”

One of the highlights of last season was the giant poppy foil display the group created in November to honour those who served during the First World War.

Moore says another foil display is in the pipeline and believes it will be a first for the Premier League.

He said: “We’re not quite sure at what game we will do it but it will be in September and it will be the first foil display in the Premier League that spans a whole stadium. So when we get that sorted it will be a big moment for us.”

Since his arrival at Watford, Hornets head coach Quique Sanchez Flores has continuously stressed the importance of the supporters and the role they will play this season, something that has impressed Moore.

He said: “Hopefully he can relay that message to the new players. I know last season the players really appreciated what we did. Troy Deeney said as much at the end of season awards.

“They are ultimately who we are doing everything for. So when you get that praise it makes you 100 per cent sure what you are doing is the right thing.

“The challenge is to keep it going and to build on what we have already achieved.”

Around £5,200 has been donated to the group since it launched a fundraising page two months ago. If you would like to donate to the group visit www.gofundme.com/tt7yw3c
