Watford head coach Quique Sanchez Flores hopes to bring a sense of theatre to Watford’s matches at Vicarage Road this season.

It is a slightly strange comment from the Spaniard but it gives an indication as to what he expects from his side in the Premier League.

Yes, the aim is survival but it won’t be at the expense of Flores’ football philosophy. He wants his side to play passing football and entertain the thousands of fans who pay their hard-earned money to watch the Golden Boys.

This evening (Friday) Watford return to Vicarage Road for the first time since winning promotion to the top flight.

The Hornets take on Sevilla in a pre-season friendly, their last scheduled warm-up game before their Premier League campaign kicks off at Everton on Saturday, August 8.

Flores is looking forward to his first match-day experience of Vicarage Road and believes the Europa League winners will provide his side’s toughest test of the summer.

“They (Sevilla) will be at another level [to the Hornets’ other pre-season opponents],” Flores admitted.

“Our level of opponent has been getting higher and higher during pre-season and Sevilla is another level up for us.

"It is going to be an amazing experience against an amazing opponent. In front of our supporters it is time to show what we can do.

“We are working for the fans, they are not working for us. We want the (home) games to be like theatre for the supporters and it will be amazing to play in our stadium.

Flores added: “It is a game that I’ve been looking forward to. We want to create a high atmosphere at the game because we will need to have a high atmosphere at home throughout the season.”

In just eight days Watford will walk out at Goodison Park looking to claim their first Premier League points of the season.

The squad that won promotion from the Championship in May has been added to with nine new players while Matej Vydra’s loan deal has been turned into a permanent move.

It leaves Flores with a selection dilemma and inevitably several players will be left disappointed when the match-day squad for the clash against the Toffees is named.

But any members of the Hornets’ squad looking to leave a lasting impression on Flores in tonight’s friendly are likely to find themselves disappointed.

The Spaniard has stressed he will not select a side based on performances in games. He is instead focused on their dedication and work ethic during the week.

“For me the chance to prove themselves is in the training sessions,” he said. “If a player believes that their chance to prove themselves is in the match then they may find it is too late.

“For me the players have the chance every day in training. That is always when I am choosing the players for the next game.”

  • Watford host their community open day on Sunday at West Herts Sports Club. The event runs from 12.30pm to 4pm with the players and Flores in attendance.
