Watford’s Diego Fabbrini seems to have quickly impressed on loan at Middlesbrough. So much so that Boro winger Albert Adomah has nicknamed the Italian ‘Diego Maradona’.

Fabbrini, who joined the Hornets two years ago from Udinese, will spend the season with the Teeside club after failing to establish himself in the Golden Boys’ first team.

The 25-year-old started his first game for Boro on Tuesday night and helped Aitor Karanka’s side clinch a 3-1 win over Oldham Athletic in the Capital One Cup.

Fabbrini won a penalty and created a goal during the contest and has seemingly make an impression on his new teammates.

When Adomah was asked about the one-cap Italian international, he told the Evening Gazette: “Diego Maradona? He’s unbelievable. That’s my nickname for him.

“Diego is so skilful. If you give him a chance he’s so clever and will create chances for the team.

“Sometimes it may look like he’s being selfish but he’s still taking two or three players out of the game. He’s entertaining but is also doing hard work creating chances - he’s not just showboating for the sake of it.

“Last weekend when he put me through on goal (at Preston) I should have scored, but that’s what we need - clever players.

“We’ve basically replaced Lee Tomlin in a way, and Fabbrini is more skilful so it helps the team.

“In training he’s always like that. He goes in for tackles, he wants the ball, he wants to do everything.

“I remember last season when we played Millwall, (Aitor Karanka) was on our case saying ‘just watch out for this player’.

“Basically the teamtalk was about Fabbrini, believe it or not. It shows the calibre that the player is, and hopefully the supporters will see that even more.”
