Why did Alan Shearer have to make that comment about Watford not doing 0-0 draws on Match of the Day two weeks ago? If there was anything that was going to prove to be a commentator’s curse, then that was it. And so it has proved.

Watford’s previous two results are down to Shearer then, right? Not exactly. In truth, the Hornets problems lie a little deeper and closer to home.

Some fans grumbled about Watford’s failure to score for the second match running after yesterday's 0-0 draw with Southampton but there were still plenty of positives to take away from the game.

Once again, the Hornets looked ever so comfortable in the Premier League.

The defence was rock solid again and Southampton were mainly restricted to half chances.

New signings Allan Nyom and Sebastian Prodl continued to impress whilst Craig Cathcart has made the step-up to the Premier League look effortless.

Ikechi Anya also showcased why he was given the nod by Quique Sanchez Flores, as he terrorised the Southampton defence during the first half.

The Scotland international was moved to left-back after half-time and Anya went about his defensive duties well and was always available out wide.

Valon Behrami and Etienne Capoue were as reliable as ever and the latter was my man of the match. He dictated play and did all of the dirty work in midfield.

Mind you, I think I’ll be having nightmares about the former Tottenham Hotspur man’s glaring miss following Troy Deeney’s flick on but all will be forgiven if he scores the winner at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. That might be a long shot, I know. But I remain hopeful.

But the main problems from last week reared their head once again at Vicarage Road yesterday.

The crosses into the box were poor, with Jose Manuel Jurado, Anya and Alessandro Diamanti failing to beat the first man on countless occasions. That meant Deeney and Odion Ighalo were once again feeding off scraps.

Deeney was isolated up front and I can sympathise with the Hornets’ talisman.

The Golden Boy’s captain won a number of headers but nobody in a Watford shirt made a run to pick up his flick-ons. It allowed the Saints to calmly clear their lines time and time again.

This is where Matej Vydra would have helped, due to the understanding that he has with Deeney.

His pace would also frighten opposition defenders and I would love to see what both Vydra and Deeney could do together up front in the Premier League.

The uncertainty surrounding his future is unwanted and I certainly feel that Flores should give the Czech striker a go. We’ve got nothing to lose.

In short, there were plenty of positives to take away from Sunday’s game. Watford just need to turn their possession into chances.

And they also need to improve their crosses in to the box. Deeney and Ighalo need something to go for.

But the Hornets remain unbeaten and are still above the likes of Tottenham Hotspur in the table. If we were offered that at the start of the season, I think we’d have all taken it.
