Oxhey Jets boss Wayne Gladdy hopes the return of some experienced heads can help improve the attitude of others after seeing his side pick up a much-needed 1-0 win at Biggleswade United on Saturday.

Jets have endured a sluggish start to the new Spartan South Midlands Premier Division campaign but made it back-to-back wins in the league thanks to a goal from stand-in Tim O’Mara on his 30th birthday.

The striker rose highest to head home Andy Brennan’s free-kick and lift Jets up to 14th.

Once again shorn of a number of first-team squad members, Gladdy brought veteran Chris Harding back after six seasons away, as well as Jon Daily and Brennan. There were also run outs for three 16-year-old members of Jets’ Academy.

Now Gladdy hopes those players can raise the standards at the club. He said: “The attitude of some in recent weeks has not been great and that includes training and turning up for matches on time.

“I don’t know if there is an underlying reason or if these are one offs – I hope it’s the latter. I’m hoping the people we have brought back and brought in will have a slightly better attitude. It’s not the whole team or squad but there are times where we have let ourselves down.

“Hopefully the likes of Chris and Andy will rub off on a few.”

Jets might have fallen behind when Biggleswade were awarded a controversial first-half penalty for an Ellis Brown foul, but the resulting spot-kick was skied over the bar.

It was suggested contact had been made outside of the penalty area but Gladdy wasn’t so sure.

He said: “My players said it wasn’t a penalty but it was a definite foul. The players said it was outside the box but the linesman gave it straight away. I didn’t argue because I couldn’t see clearly.

“But the way the linesman gave it leads me to believe it was.”

Gladdy added: “The performance wasn’t great but the attitude was fantastic; we just battled hard so I am very pleased.”

Sun Sports exited the FA Vase at the extra preliminary round stage, going down 2-1 at Northampton ON Chenecks on Saturday.

Behind early on, Sun levelled through Joe Kelly from the penalty spot only to lose in injury time.

Berkhamsted eased to a 4-1 home win over Woodford United in the Vase with goals from Frankie Jowle, Jude Eboji, Nick Jackson and Bradley O’Donovan.

Tring Athletic are also through to the next round after overcoming Burton Park Wanderers 4-0 in a replay on Tuesday.

The first tie ended goalless on Saturday but a Christopher Vardy hat-trick and an Oliver Hogg goal sent Tring through.

Leverstock Green battered Colney Heath 8-1 to secure their place, Louis Bircham scoring four, Chris Blunden bagging a hat-trick from the bench and Luke Preedy wrapping up the win.
