Golden Boys skipper Troy Deeney answered questions from fans during an extensive interview with talkSPORT yesterday evening. We’ve picked out the highlights.

Strangest rule a manager last season implemented at Watford?

“It’s not really a rule. It was more advice. One of them said: ‘You’re a big guy but you’re running faster than last year and all your stats are higher. If you lose 2kg you’ll be in the England team.’

“That was the statement that stuck with me. I’ve lost about 5kg though and I’m still not in the England team!”

Best player you’ve come up against so far this season?

“John Stones. He is quality for his age. He reads the game, has great athleticism and he can play. We played Everton first game of the season and with all the things that were surrounding him [speculation of a move to Chelsea] he handled himself really well.

“He is a young kid and there was a lot of national press and attention on him. To only make a couple of mistakes - against a team who played well and I was quite physical, which may have been a shock - over the course of a game means he is top drawer.”

What is Watford’s multinational squad like?

“It’s good fun because you get to learn a lot of swear words in a lot of different languages,” Deeney joked.

“We did have [an interpreter] last season but with the recruitment side [this summer] I think the question was asked if players spoke English.

“I think there are three who don’t at the moment but they are having quite intensive English lessons.

"I’ve had to listen to Lloyd Doyley for most of my time at Watford though and that's like a whole different nationality.”

What have you made of Odion Ighalo’s impressive form this season?

“If you’ve seen most of Iggy’s goals over the past year than that (his goal against Bournemouth) could’ve only happened to him. That is his goal.

“Last season we played Blackpool and he got four. On one of the goals I shot, the ball hit the post, rebounded onto his head and went in. He didn’t see it happen but that was for his hat-trick.

“He is a poacher. Being in the right position once or twice can be lucky but he is always in the right place because he senses danger.”

Are you an England fan?

“Of course. I am not someone who says ‘we’ve won all of our qualifiers so we have to go and win it (Euro 2016)’.

“I am very conscious that, having so many players coming in with different nationalities, other countries are tactically ahead of us.

“That’s why there is an influx of foreign managers now. That doesn’t mean they are right but you can see the tactical side to possession and small sided games.

“Five or six years ago English managers did that all the time but I’ve been with mangers who do two or three hour tactical sessions. I think it shows us how far behind the times we are.”

What is the best moment of his career?

“Even though we lost, having all my family at Wembley [for the play-off final].”

What is your ideal formation?

“One where I score goals.”

What’s the atmosphere in the dressing room like after signing so many players?

“They are good lads who all have a point to prove. We haven’t signed people who have been in the Premier League before and have nothing to prove.

“(Etienne) Capoue is the perfect example of that. He didn’t have the best time at Tottenham but has been top drawer for us.”

Your next game is against Arsenal. Which of their players do you fear?

“Their front six,” Deeney joked. “Nearly all of Arsenal’s players are internationals, they train next to us, although there will probably be nobody there except for their under-4s this week. Everyone else is an international.

“We are in two separate buildings. In pre-season when you hear the whistle going and you’re running, next door they are all playing football and laughing. That’s not very nice to hear.”

Biggest aspect Quique Sanchez Flores has added to Watford?

“The team comes above everything. It doesn’t matter if I score or Ighalo scores. If they team win then it is job done.”

Does Flores ever get angry?

“He does get angry but because he is so nice you can tell when he is angry. He is usually nice all the time but one day maybe he’s woken up ten minutes later than normal and he is a bit moody.”

Who is your dream striker to play alongside?

“Sergio Aguero.”

What is the best night out you’ve been on with your teammates?

“After Brighton last season [the day Watford won promotion]. We went out in Watford. It was totally unplanned and we ended up in Yates’s.

"Stan (Collymore) decided to give me a call and ask how we were doing when we were about eight bottles of brandy deep.”

What is you goal target for the season?

“I want to aim for 20.”
