Sebastien Bassong said before Watford took on Norwich City that he’d be passing on tips to his Canaries teammates about how to stop Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo. It doesn’t appear they took any notice.

The Hornets’ strike partnership were once again at their destructive best this afternoon. Both scored and the Golden Boys won 2-0.

It was yet another fantastic Premier League afternoon for Watford supporters. Deeney fired home a first half penalty, which Ighalo had won, before the Nigerian tucked home a late second.

The Hornets sit in the top half of the table this evening and with every passing week the threat of relegation eases.

Quique Sanchez Flores made two changes to the side which started the victory at Aston Villa. Jose Manuel Jurado replaced Almen Abdi while Ikechi Anya came into the team with Juan Carlos Paredes named on the bench.

The opening 25 minutes passed without major incident. Both teams struggled, largely due to the driving wind, to maintain possession and several players’ first touches were poor.

A deflected shot from Ben Watson which bounced wide and a powerful effort from Nathan Ake which was blocked were the only chances Watford fans had to get out of their seats for.

But the game then came to life. Etienne Capoue robbed Alex Tettey of the ball and and released Ighalo.

The Nigerian international was under pressure from Bassong and Tettey. The latter dived into a challenge and Ighalo was felled. Mike Dean pointed to the spot.

Subsequent replays suggested Tettey may have won the ball. Not that Watford fans will have any sympathy for the Canaries after Wes Hoolahan dived to win a penalty in February's Championship meeting.

Deeney stepped up and, as he did against Manchester United and Leicester City, thumped the ball into the net.

He is now the first Hornets player to score in four consecutive Premier League games.

The goal sparked a period of Watford pressure and the Hornets thought they had a second when Ighalo touched home from Nyom’s header.

But the assistant flagged for offside and the goal was ruled out. Television replays indicated the wrong call was made.

There was no frustration shown by Watford. Instead they carved out another chance.

Ighalo received the ball 18 yards out, tricked his way past Ryan Bennett and fired low. But Declan Rudd was quickly out of his goal and saved.

Norwich’s only effort in the opening 45 minutes arrived in stoppage time. Robbie Brady delivered a deep free kick which was flicked over by Bassong. It was the final action of the half.

The second period began with a great chance for the Canaries. A hopeful punt forward, partly due to the wind, drifted into the path of Brady. The winger attempted a first time shot from 18 yards but miscued and the ball bounced harmlessly wide.

Norwich played with greater attacking intent in the second half but that left them susceptible to Watford attacks.

The Hornets continuously threatened on the counter and Ighalo caused countless problems. The Nigerian was first denied by Rudd at the near post before the goalkeeper was quickly out to block after an exquisite pass from Capoue. It became an ongoing battle.

Watford’s striker then beat two Norwich defenders to a hopeful ball forward from Deeney before hooking wide.

Quite simply, the Canaries couldn’t deal with Ighalo’s movement and persistence. Bennett flattened the 26-year-old and was booked.

Ighalo was quickly back on his feet and forced Rudd into an excellent low stop before having another effort denied by the visiting goalkeeper.

Norwich attempted to mount a late charge at the Watford goal and hit several hopeful crosses into the Hornets penalty area.

One of those led to Bassong clattering into Gomes. The Brazilian stopper stayed down, perhaps still feeling the effects of the neck injury he suffered against Aston Villa.

But after treatment he was able to continue and was soon forced into action to palm clear a shot from Graham Dorrans.

Six minutes of time was added. The home crowd groaned. Moments later they erupted with noise. Ighalo finally got the better of Rudd.

Deeney flicked the ball forward and Ighalo sprinted after it. He held off Bassong and slipped the ball under Rudd. His celebration was emphatic. Shirt off. Thrown to the ground and a roar of passion.

Moments later he was withdrawn to a standing ovation. His teammates received the same treatment at full time. And the Hornets fans went home happy.
