Watford haven’t offered Emmanuel Adebayor a contract - contrary to reports in the national media - as the Hornets are no longer pursuing the striker, the Watford Observer understands.

It has been reported the Golden Boys have approached the Togo international with a short-term deal which would run until the end of the campaign. We understand this is not the case.

Earlier in the season Watford did explore the possibility of signing the 31-year-old this month, primarily as cover from Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo.

But the Hornets’ form in the top flight over the past month has seen the threat of relegation significantly ease and, as a result, they have decided to pursue other targets.

Adebayor, who has also played for Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid, has been a free agent since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in September.

Spurs are still paying his £100,000-a-week wage and any club who attempt to sign the striker will have to come to an agreement with the north London side over how much of that sum they would cover.
