Craig Cathcart has become the second Watford player to reach the last 16 of the European Championships after Northern Ireland were guaranteed one of the four best third-place spots in France tonight.

Michael O'Neill's men were left to wait to see if their stay at Euro 2016 would be extended after losing 1-0 to world champions Germany this afternoon, but they are now certain of progressing from Group C on goal difference after Turkey beat the Czech Republic 2-0 tonight.

The Hornets defender joins teammate and Swiss midfielder Valon Behrami in the next phase of the competition and Northern Ireland will now meet either Wales on Saturday at 5pm or host nation France the following day at 2pm as they attempt to reach the last eight in their first ever appearance at the finals.

But while Cathcart can look forward to an extended stay in France, Czech Republic's defeat means that club-mate Daniel Pudil is heading home after they finished bottom of Group D.

Goals from Burak Yilmaz and Ozan Tufan ended the Czech's run in the tournament, but Pudil did play the full 90 minutes having been an unused substitute in the first two matches.

Attention now moves to the last round of group matches tomorrow when Sebastian Prodl will also be aiming to advance to the last 16 with Austria.

The Watford centre-half's nation are currently bottom of Group F ahead of their 5pm meeting with Iceland in Paris, but with three points separating Austria from leaders Portugal several permutations remain possible.
