Ollie Taverner has completed a breaststroke double at the British Summer Championships in superb record-breaking style after winning the 50m title by more than a second.

Having claimed the 15 years 100m crown by almost a second on Tuesday, the North Watford youngster stormed to the one length title at Ponds Forge in a scintillating 29.39 yesterday evening, finishing well clear of runner-up Adam Metcalf (30.67).

The former Queens’ School pupil’s winning time was a new British age group record and fully vindicated a calculated decision he had made earlier in the day.

Taverner knew he was in potential record-breaking form after clocking 29.84 in the morning’s heats, but he had earlier qualified in sixth place for the final of the 100m backstroke. But the swimmer opted to pull out of that final to give himself the best chance of beating the 50m breaststroke age group record of 29.46, set by Charlie Attwood in August 2013.

The record-breaking performance was good enough to move the Watford Swimming Club member, who attends Mount Kelly Swimming School in Devon, into 27th place in the British rankings for the event across all age groups this year.

Tavener, who attends Mount Kelly Swimming School in Devon and also secured the 50m and 100m breaststroke double at last year’s championships, has a rest day today but will be back in the Sheffield pool tomorrow for the 200m breaststroke. The 200m individual medley follows on Saturday before his championships conclude with the 4x100m medley relay and 200m backstroke on Sunday.
