Trampolinist Kayleigh McCarthy came in second place at the national finals in Telford to secure one of her best achievements to date.

McCarthy, who won the East of England championships two years running, rounded off the competitive season with a score of 90.650.

At the event, competitors had to complete two routines – one with an emphasis on neatness and another which entails showing off their difficulty – as she scored 42.435 and 48.215 respectively.

She said: “I was quite surprised to have finished second but I thought my routine had gone really well and one of the best routines I have ever done. I knew my second routine went really well like the first one, so I just had to wait for the others to finish.

“My coach was looking at the result, but I didn’t want to follow it. And I was happily surprised to have come second.”

The Garston trampolinist added: “I was really pleased it all came together on the day as it was a long season of competing. So it was nice to see my hard work had paid off and that everything came together nicely.

“I have been competing in the sport for a long time so I knew I had to keep focused.”

McCarthy thanked her coach Pat Dodson and said could not have done it without her.

“I wouldn’t be where I am now without my coach,” she said.

“I am just so grateful for everything he does, he prepares me for competitions, in training and supports me at the events.

“So I am very pleased we got there together as it is a team effort.”

As of yet, McCarthy has no set plans for the future but she is jetting off to Rio 2016 next week to support Team GB trampolining and the rest of the GB squad.
