Heurelho Gomes believes Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri will adapt the team's system this season if they are not comfortable with the formation.

The Hornets have played 3-5-2 throughout this pre-season under the Italian but switched to 4-3-3 in the first half of yesterday's 2-2 draw with Lorient after Isaac Success was brought on.

Gomes admits it is not easy changing between systems but thinks it is important Watford are adaptable under new boss Mazzarri this season.

The Hornets goalkeeper said: “To be honest every time we change system it’s not easy but we need to work on it. We’ve been working since the first day of pre-season.

"Even when we didn’t kick a ball we tried to work on the system and the players understand this. Of course the manager knows if we are not prepared yet to do this system, or go back to another system, he will say for sure because he understands football and that’s the most important thing.

"We train with other systems as well so it’s not just that one. You saw we changed today but we have trained with that as well. Today we can play 3-4-3, 4-4-2 and that is not a problem."

Watford are preparing for their Premier League opener at Southampton on Saturday and Gomes thinks the team have developed their tactics and understanding of Mazzarri's demands over the course of pre-season.

He said: “We try to do our best always. The manager has come in with new ideas and we try to follow his ideas the best we can. We tried different formations like we did today with 3-5-2 and changed to 4-3-3.

"Of course we need to improve and that’s what pre-season games are about to improve each system and idea the manager puts on the pitch. We have done the best we can."
