Kings Langley joint boss Paul Hughes believes his side are adapting to life in the Southern Premier Division, after they registered a first win of the season in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night.

Hughes and Ritchie Hanlon’s side had picked up only an opening-day point from their first three games in the seventh tier, and were denied their first win when three goals without reply overturned a 2-0 lead against rivals Slough Town on Saturday.

Any worries over how they will cope with the pressure of competing in the division, following three promotions in three years, were temporarily cast aside, however, as they bounced back in the most emphatic fashion possible on Tuesday night.

Their style has not been in question, but results will prove the only true definition of Kings’ season – and goals from Jack Waldren, Sean Coughlan and a double from Immanuelson Duku saw them to a 4-0 win at Biggleswade Town.

It is a point not lost on Hughes, who said in pre-season the first month would reveal how they will cope – and four games in, he is in little doubt that they will do so.

“We believe if we’re performing well the results will go our way in the end”, he said. “Our performances had been good up until Biggleswade anyway so we stayed confident.

“We couldn’t finish at Dunstable and against Slough we couldn’t defend. It all came together on Tuesday and we got a win we deserved.

“Not many teams will win 4-0 away from home at this level, but we have. It shows that we can compete in this league.”

Three days earlier Slough’s aerial strength had caught Kings out with the hosts seemingly cruising, and each of their three comeback goals came from set pieces.

Hughes revealed tough sessions to improve their defending had taken place following the game, and he was left impressed as his side went on to notch their first clean sheet of the season in their Biggleswade win.

He said: “We simply could not deal with the set pieces they threw at us.

“We felt we had control of the game and that turned it completely. We needed to brush up on our mistakes and make sure we had the desire to defend.

“We focused on it coming into the Biggleswade game, and the players did very well.”

On Saturday, Kings will host a Frome Town side buoyed by a bright start to the season, with three wins from their opening four games, but Hughes is again in confident mood.

He said: “They’ve had a good start and carried on their form from last season.  “We’re under no illusion that it will be tough, but if we can impose our game on them, we can cause them some problems.”
