Tring Athletic lost 2-1 to London Colney on Saturday and will feel disappointed at coming away pointless after a good performance.

Ashley Morrissey and Archie McClelland scored for the home side as they continued their strong start to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division season.

Chris Vardy equalised for Tring but they could not hold on for the draw as they needed to readjust after losing key players in pre-season.

Midway through the half, Tring’s Tommy Twelves, who alongside fellow new signing Lessa Boka slotted impressively into defence, saw his deflected shot drift wide of the far post.

The visitors then nearly shot themselves in the foot when a poor back pass was seized on by Russell Gallagher but from a tight angle he shot wide of the far post.

But against the run of play Colney opened the scoring in the 38th minute as Morrissey lobbed the keeper in spectacular fashion.

Colney went into the break 1-0 up but Athletic started the second period on the front foot and there was a call for a penalty which was ignored.

Vardy got the equaliser after latching onto a flick from Dave O’Connor and calmly slotting the ball past the keeper in the 54th minute.

But with 10 minutes Colney substitute McClelland ran through to score what proved to be the winner.

Berkhamsted got their first away win of the season on Saturday thanks to two fine strikes from Adam Mead against Holmer Green.

There were plenty of chances compared to Berkhamsted’s previous matches this season but it was Mead who made the home side pay with a perfectly struck free kick.

There was a flurry of home substitutions in the match before Mead sealed the points with another sweetly struck shot as the ball was played across the front of the penalty area into his path.

At the other end Green hit the bar and Carl Tasker tipped the rebound over to earn the Comrades a first clean sheet since April.

Leverstock Green got their first league points of the campaign as they beat St Margaretsbury 5-1 in Saturday’s match at Pancake Lane courtesy of a Jonathan Lacey first-half hat-trick.

The opener came in the 10th minute when Ben Butler played a sideways ball to Lacey, who drilled home a shot from the edge of the box.

Six minutes later, Green doubled their lead as Curtis Donaldson threaded a great pass through to Aaron Lewis, who neatly slotted home his first goal for the club.

And it was 3-0 before the half-an-hour mark when Lacey pounced to smash home his second of the game.

The best was yet to come from Lacey; Donaldson’s corner was headed away, but only as far as the hat-trick scorer who volleyed from 20 yards into the top corner.

The visitors pulled a goal back in the 68th minute when Courtney Clay hit a shot from the edge of the box.

Green scored their fifth in the 77th minute as Donaldson got onto the scoresheet when Ashley Addison put him through.
