Oxhey Jets will not be out to settle old scores when they travel to Kempston Rovers in the FA Cup tomorrow, according to general manager John Elliott.

The Jets were 2-0 up in the extra preliminary round of the cup at Kempston last season when goalkeeper Will Baker threw the ball out of play to allow a player to receive treatment.

But instead of throwing the ball back, Kempston used the good position to their advantage – and seconds later Jason Turner reduced the arrears.

They would later complete a turnaround and advance 3-2 at the Jets’ expense, the club left incensed and without a £1,500 payday.

Wholesale changes have since taken place among the club’s playing staff, and only two of their squad from that defeat still play for the club.

But Elliott admitted it would be still in his mind when they meet again, in the Jets’ first appearance in the preliminary round for four years, and a £1,925 bounty on offer.

“It will definitely be something I’m thinking about,” he said. “I imagine it will be the same for the staff. There is no chance we’ll be putting the ball out for a throw-in if there’s an injury.

“We’ll leave that to the referee to deal with, but there will be no hangover from us, just a clear warning to be careful of trusting them.

“But there has been a lot of changes here; it was only one of their players that did it and it’s not revenge.”

Oxhey have enjoyed a bright start under new manager Lee Stedman, with two straight league wins ahead of this weekend’s tie – 3-2 at home to Colney Heath and 2-0 at Edgware Town on Tuesday.

They will go into the game as underdogs, with Kempston a league above the Jets and enjoying some good form of their own, but Elliott is acutely aware of the possibilities should they progress.

To do so would see them play either Jets’ league rivals Wembley or Harefield United of the division below in the first preliminary round, where the prize pot will rise to £3,000.

“It’s possibly one of the hardest draws of the lot,” he said. “Both sides know the draw is against someone from our level in the next round.

“It could end up being a very good pay day and the chance to play someone bigger.”
