Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri apologised to their fans after the Premier League side were dumped out of the EFL Cup at home to Gillingham.

The Hornets squandered a lead for the third consecutive match as their League One opponents condemned them to another miserable League Cup exit.

Speaking after their 2-1 defeat at Vicarage Road, Mazzarri said: “I’m sorry especially for the fans.

"They don’t deserve to see us losing and they were very warm and supported us so I’m really sorry for the fans."

Watford were booed off the pitch and the Italian had no complaints after this forgettable defeat.

Mazzarri was more concerned with his players' mentality and believes the team need to change the way they react to taking the lead.

Watford Observer:

The Hornets' head coach said: “Up until the time when we scored we were in control. We were creating chances and had about seven or eight chances.

"As soon as we went ahead, we completely changed the way we played. This is what I need to work on. I need to change this mentality and what happens in the moment that we go ahead."

Mazzarri continued: “I’m very angry because we can’t see the danger. The moment we go ahead, we should carry on playing well but we just don’t see the danger then.

“Instead of becoming stronger and working harder we changed completely our attitude and we really need to work on that."
