WATFORD Ladies succumbed to another FA WSL 2 defeat as they lost 2-1 to Millwall Lionesses and now sit four points behind their relegation rivals.

Goals from Lucy Loomes and Ashlee Hincks cancelled out Anne-Laure Davy’s equaliser and was enough to give Millwall the three points and move away from the bottom of the table.

The Lionesses documented their first win since March 24 and goal scorer Day told the FA WSL website it was a disappointing day.

“We got back into the game, kept pushing and we were very motivated. We had belief and we thought we could go on and win the game but it wasn’t enough,” she added.

“After they scored again, we tried very hard to get it back, but that’s football, we tried hard to make it 2-2 but we didn’t do quite enough.

“It’s frustrating for all of us because it was a massive game for us and for them, we knew that.

“We kept possession very well in the second half. Everybody worked very hard and that’s why it’s so frustrating to come away with nothing.

“But I think it will come. We worked really hard we just need that little break. Everything will fall into place eventually.”

Millwall raced out of the traps and were ahead inside two minutes. Amber Gaylor’s effort came back off the post but Hincks was quickest to react, planting the ball past Lucy Gillett in the Watford goal.

Bonnie Horwood went close to a second but couldn’t keep her header down and Gillett twice denied Loomes as Milwall bossed the first half.

But Watford levelled on 53 minutes when Davy rose highest to head Anneka Nuttall’s precise free kick home.

Parity lasted just eight minutes though before Loomes waltzed through the Watford defence before slotting home via the base of the post to put the south London side back in front.

Watford saw plenty of the ball, but were always susceptible to the counter attack and Loomes went close again when put clear but her lob cleared the bar, while Nicole Pepper had to head off her own line to deny Millwall a third.

Loomes described her winning goal in the game as one of the most important in her career as she added: “It’s a massive win for us. We came here to get three points and we got them.

“We knew it was a massive game and we responded to the challenge and got the result that we really needed and wanted.

“We got off to a dream start. Our game plan was always to hit them hard right from the start and try and get a goal early doors and put the pressure on them and we did just that with the early goal.

“It was a perfect start for us. It’s always good to get a goal and get your name on the scoresheet especially a goal that was as important as that one so I am really pleased.

“It’s definitely one of the most important goals I’ve scored because it came in such an important game. But it is not an individual thing. It was a team goal and I just happened to put it in the net.”
