Division One

Second-placed West Herts kept up the pressure on leaders Old Danes Athletic as both sides enjoyed 4-0 wins on a day when the weather heavily impacted the Watford Sunday League schedule.

West Herts remain in second spot, on the same number of points as Old Danes, but trailing by ten on goal difference.

The Stags were given a tougher game than the final scoreline suggests by Colne Valley despite them only fielding the bare 11 players.

Both sides battled away in the first half with neither able to get on top and it remained goalless at the break.

The home side finally broke the deadlock early in the second period when a corner from Anthony Gilberta found midfielder Khodi Cain unmarked at the far past to head his side into the lead.

The game was far from over as Valley fought back, seeing a goal ruled out for offside while Rob Miller pulled off a string of fine saves to keep his side in the lead.

It was not until eight minutes left when the hosts made the points safe as George Chopping was fouled in the area, allowing Anthony Gilbert to convert the resulting penalty.

Valley’s resistance was finally broken and three minutes later Sam Saleh added a third with a volley and Chris Colman made it four deep into injury time.

Old Danes had a more comfortable time of it in their 4-0 win over third-placed North Watford.

Despite playing uphill on a very muddy pitch at Woodside, Old Danes went ahead after 11 minutes when Josh Burks ran in from the right to meet a cross to power home a shot.

The lead was doubled 12 minutes later when Will Keddy ran onto a through ball and slid it past the keeper.

Despite having the supposed advantage of playing down hill in the second half, Old Danes didn’t seal the win until they scored twice in the final 13 minutes, through Ross Bennett and then Joel Foskett late on.
