Callum Shinkwin has started his European Tour season with a share of 23rd place at the Abu Dhabi Championship but it was a case of what might have been after his hopes of a top-ten finish were ended on one hole.
The Moor Park Golf Club professional dropped a shot at the par four third but it was what happened at the next hole that effectively ended the 23-year-old’s hopes of remaining at the sharp end of the field on the final day.
Shinkwin’s tournament score of eight-under was suddenly reduced to four-under following a quadruple bogey seven on the par three fourth. He steadied the ship though, with back-to-back pars before retrieving one of those dropped shots on the next par three, the seventh.
A second birdie of the round followed on the par four 13th and Shinkwin completed a two-over final round of 74 after also picking up a shot on the par five 18th to leave him on seven-under, ten shots behind winner Tommy Fleetwood.
The former English Amateur Champion is entered into the Qatar Masters, which gets under way on Thursday at Doha Golf Club.
