Watford fans will have their own thoughts about what was the best team the late Graham Taylor built as Hornets manager but who would make a select XI from all his years at the Vicarage Road helm?

How many of the side that won back-to-back promotions to reach the Premier League in the 1999 Play-Off Final would make it into the Hornets team that finished runners-up in the old First Division in 1982? That is one question to weigh up in your considerations and in doing so help us to compile Graham Taylor’s Watford Select XI.

The make-up of the team will be decided by a reader vote but today we are starting the process of seeking nominations to make up a player longlist.

Nominations are open to any Watford player who made a competitive (league or cup) first-team appearance during Taylor’s three spells as manager at Vicarage Road – from August 1977 to May 1987, August 1997 to May 2001 and the 18 Hornets matches he was in charge of from February 24, 1996 to May 5, 1996.

To make your nominations, email your Graham Taylor Watford Select XI – consisting of a goalkeeper, four defenders, four midfielder and two strikers – to amatthews@london.newsquest.co.uk by noon on Friday, March 3
