In a game dubbed the ‘Brewers’ Classic’, Carlsberg-sponsored Oxhey Jets emerged narrow victors against their Budweiser Wembley visitors at the Boundary Stadium on Saturday.

The 1-0 victory could prove vital in Jets’ efforts to soar clear of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division drop-zone, even after a midweek defeat by the same scoreline at the hands of local rivals Tring Athletic.

On Saturday, they produced a performance belying of their troubled season to see off fifth-placed Wembley, and could have gone ahead in the 11th minute when Scott Pugsley was denied by a strong save.

Adam Lowton tapped home what appeared the opener shortly after the half-hour mark, only to be denied by a tight call from the linesman’s flag.

Ian Hurst went close again for the hosts who needed to make their dominance count, and had another goal ruled out - again correctly - handball before the interval.

Four minutes before half-time the first goal finally came, and from an unlikely source. Liam James’ surging run from the back ended with a fine shot which beat the Wembley goalkeeper at his near post.

Two stunning saves from Rob Partington after half-time kept Jets ahead while Wembley also struck the bar, but with the hosts sighting a crucial three points on the horizon, they hung on for victory in what manager Lee Stedman called their best performance of the season.

On Tuesday night they travelled to Tring Athletic but were downed by George Carbery’s goal in a game where they showed their mettle but ended up beaten 1-0.

Partington was again in fine form to push an early Chris Vardy effort onto the post, which set the tone for the evening.

Before Tring could test him again, however, Scott Pugsley fired wide for the visitors, who looked dangerous on the break, but Carbery should have opened the scoring from the home side’s next opportunity rather than firing over.

Sim Armstrong missed Jets’ best chance of the game when his fierce shot sailed over with the game becoming increasingly end-to-end, but Tring were creating the better opportunities and Vardy again struck the bar before half-time.

The resistance was finally breached after 68 minutes when Luke Dunstan’s free-kick was headed across goal by Chris Stapleton, and Carbery was on hand to tap in from close range.

Carbery and Vardy, the latter from an audacious long-range lob, both could have added to the hosts’ lead but were denied by Partington’s cat-like heroics once again.

Jets rallied late on but Tring stood firm to see out a narrow victory which lifts them to fifth in the table, following on from Saturday’s 3-0 win over Broxbourne, where Dunstan, Jack Read and David O’Connor netted in a confident performance.

Sun Sports were on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat to Hertford Town on Tuesday night, as their pursuit of a top-half finish took a blow in north east Hertfordshire at Hertingfordbury Park.

Hertford led from the 11th minute when a cross from the right was nodded in with a bullet header from Phil Lowen.

The hosts had started brightly and continued in that vain, doubling their lead a minute before the break when Ramone Cassidy-Sinclair finished off another cross.

Sun provided little in the way of hope that they might reduce the deficit and get themselves back into the game, and now sit 12th, two points off the top half of the table.

On Saturday they played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Edgware Town at Silver Jubilee Park.

A 30-yard stunner from George Hobson opened the scoring for the visitors, but Town levelled the scores through Ethan Mooney.

Two minutes after half-time Sun re-took the lead, with another fine finish from Hobson, this time direct from a free-kick.

Dennis Maharjan again equalised before Edgware went ahead for the first time, but Scott Bonner secured a share of the spoils late on with a close-range finish.

Berkhamsted moved up to ninth with a 1-0 win over St Margaretsbury on Saturday, with Ikem Odeh’s first-half strike enough to seal victory.

They moved above Leverstock Green, who went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Colney Heath.
