Walter Mazzarri will leave Watford after a disappointing first season with the Hornets, the club has confirmed.

The Italian joined the Hornets in June, having previously coached Inter Milan and Napoli, in his first venture outside of his native Italy.

But after a bright first half to the season, poor results and an increasingly fractuous relationship with both the Vicarage Road fanbase and, reportedly, his own players saw him under mounting pressure in recent weeks.

A five-game losing streak sealed Mazzarri's fate, culminating in a 4-3 defeat at Chelsea on Monday night, after club sources stated he was likely to remain in charge next season as recently as last month.

The Italian will remain in charge for Watford's game with Manchester City on Sunday, a game that brings the curtain down both on their Premier League season, and his future with the club.

Watford chief executive Scott Duxbury said: “After the Board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club’s future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down from his position as the club’s Head Coach after the final game of the 2016/17 season.

“We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year.”
