New Watford signing Kiko Femenia has all the attributes to succeed in England, according to one Spanish football expert, but it remains to be seen whether he can be the answer to the Hornets' right-back problems.

The Golden Boys played natural right wing-back Daryl Janmaat and centre-halves Younes Kaboul and Craig Cathcart wide in a back four at times last season, as they looked to plug a position which had no natural suitor.

Femenia has been tipped as filling that role since his arrival at Vicarage Road on Saturday, having left former club Alaves at the end of his contract in Spain last week.

But the converted winger, who himself played as wing-back in a 3-5-2 for former club Alaves during 2016/17, may be suited to a role further up the field, according to AFP La Liga correspondent Kieran Canning.

He said: "There's no doubt about how well he has done with Alaves. He was very highly thought of as a youngster but it never really worked out until this year, when he has really started making a decent career of himself again.

"Kiko got all the technical attributes to succeed, but you can never tell with most players how they will adapt - I thought Iago Aspas would be excellent going over to Liverpool a few years ago.

"He's an ideal player as he's cheap and can play in two positions. But he started as a winger at Hercules when he was young, and he's been playing right wing-back for Alaves, so he hasn't always been defensively tested.

"When he has, he's looked good, but he has had support around him at Alaves with Marcos Llorente, on loan from Real Madrid, sitting deep, so the system has helped him in that regard.

"But Kiko's pace and ability to break out from the back was very useful for the team. His final ball is decent - but inconsistent."

Canning said Femenia's one major weakness could come in his stature - at only 5ft 9ins and not the stockiest, a lack of aerial presence may prove problematic in the physical Premier League.

"He's not the tallest and in terms of getting caught out at the back post that could prove a problem," Canning said. "Kiko's not like the players Watford have taken over from La Liga recently, people like [Adalberto] Penaranda and [Isaac] Success, who are big physical characters.

"He's not quite as fast as someone like Hector Bellerin, but he's only an inch shorter than him and that's probably the best example of the kind of player he should look to follow.

"Kiko might not have made it at Barcelona but there are other players who have gone on from their youth teams to have great careers, and it definitely will have made him a stronger player."
