Some of the biggest names in snooker will return to the Watford Colosseum next year as the venue plays host to the Coral Shoot Out.

The world-ranking event uses a unique quick-fire system which sees games last no longer than 10 minutes, and players face off in a single frame.

The addition of a shot clock ensures the frenetic speed can’t drop and departs from the slower pace of traditional snooker.

A £32,000 prize pot and the chance to score all-important world-ranking points means the 128-strong field is likely to be littered with top talent.

Local interest comes in the form of Martin Gould, who won the competition in 2013.

The Pinner-based pro trains in Watford and believes the shortened format, which does have its critics, should be embraced by players as a fun twist on the game.

“You still have to enjoy it, and it’s probably those who treat it as a fun tournament who do well,” Gould said.

“You have to accept that you might not get a shot in your first match, or you might get on a roll and go all the way.

“I can understand that for some of the lower-ranked players there is pressure because a good run can make a massive difference to their season.

“The top players just try to enjoy it. It’s a chance to win £32,000 for just over an hour’s work; in what other job can you do that.”

The 2017 edition of the tournament saw Scotland’s Anthony McGill crowned champion as he beat Xiao Guodong in the final.

Star names, including Shaun Murphy, Stuart Bingham and Jimmy White have graced the competition before and 2018 is expected to see a similar turnout.

The event take place from February 8-11 with session tickets starting at £10 and all-day admission costing £15.
