A "perfectly timed" finish saw Kyle Langford into the finals of the men's 800m at the IAAF World Championships last night, and the 21-year-old has been left cleaning out his ears with the strength of the "phenomenal" crowd roar at the London Stadium.

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers runner posted a time of 1.45.81 to reach tomorrow's final in a fantastic late run to the finish line in Stratford, having sat fifth into the final 100m of his semi-final.

That run was only 0.36 off his best ever outdoor time, set at the same location last month, and was the fifth-fastest of the eight qualifiers to make it through.

Langford's late boost was always in his mind as he approached the home straight, he revealed after the race, but it was the timing of it that pleased the Watford runner most.

He said: "It was perfectly timed at the end there. I thought I would need to be in a better position going into the last 100m but I felt good at that final stage of the race.

"When they went, I could see them kicking and I saw they were really going for it but I was still with them and I hadn’t even kicked. As soon as I kicked I could feel myself pull away and it felt great."

Langford had been fortunate to qualify from the heats after his 1.46.38 time on Saturday put him through as the second-slowest man to reach the semi-finals.

He revealed he was still feeling the effects of fatigue going into yesterday's semi-final, but put that all behind him when he got out onto the track - not that his ears will thank him for his success.

He said: "I felt a bit tired from the start but once the race got going it was all fine. I felt good towards the end and very strong in that final 100m.

"The crowd was amazing. That roar was phenomenal – it actually made my ears go funny because it was so loud but that support was incredible."
