Bushey golfer Callum Shinkwin has started the European Masters with a one-under-par opening round of 69.

Fresh from securing the fifth top-ten finish of his European Tour career after coming in a tie for ninth at the Czech Masters, the Moor Park Golf Club professional had a mixed day in Switzerland with four birdies and five bogeys.

But an eagle at the par five 15th was pivotal in enabling the 24-year-old to begin the tournament at Crans Montana in the red numbers, five shots behind joint leaders Miguel Angel Jimenez, Tyrrell Hatton and Scott Hend.

Moor Park club-mate Matt Wallace may have ended his opening 18 holes three shots further back on two-over-par, but his prospects of making the cut have been boosted by a positive finish.

Having started from the 10th, the 27-year-old was in danger of shooting an opening round of four-over after recording back-to-back dropped shots at the par four fourth and fifth holes. But Pinner-based Wallace finished birdie-par-birdie with a three at the seventh and a four at the ninth to leave him in a tie for 90th at the time of writing.
