Callum Shinkwin has made a steady start to his second round as he bids to build on a strong opening 18 holes at the Portugal Masters.

The Bushey golfer was level par through eight holes at the time of writing, leaving him on six-under-par and two shots off the lead at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.

The Moor Park professional was in a five-way share of third overnight and after starting from the 10th, he moved to seven-under with a birdie on the par five 12th, but dropped back again with a bogey five on 15.

Shinkwin was in strong birdie-making form yesterday, making three in succession from the third to the fifth and repeating the trick from the 10th to the 12th.

His only blemish came with a bogey four on 13, but the 24-year-old ensured he would finish his opening round on six-under by making his seventh birdie at the par five 17th.

Reigning Open de Portugal champion and Moor Park club-mate Matt Wallace is among the afternoon starters and he currently sits in a large group the right side of the projected cut at two-under.

The 27-year-old, who travelled to Portugal in good form off the back of his third European Tour top-10 finish last week, also made a strong start and had reached three-under after his opening six holes yesterday.

A bogey five at 18 dropped Wallace back to two-under, but back-to-back birdies at four and five left him good shape for the closing holes.

Disappointingly though, the Pinner-based professional made a bogey four at six and ended his opening round with another dropped shot at the par four ninth.
