Berkhamsted took the local bragging rights as they edged out Oxhey Jets in a closely-contested clash in the South Midlands Premier Division on Tuesday.

The 1-0 win keeps Berko at the front of the queue in the race to be champions and sees them maintain their unbeaten record.

Jon Munday was the man who scored the all-important goal as he notched his seventh strike of the season.

They could easily have won the game by more, but failed to convert their chances on a day when Jets produced precious little going forward.

Munday’s winner came in the 23rd minute and was the product of a sweeping move which allowed him to convert from six yards.

Typically, Berko’s failure to extend their lead was almost punished late on as Jets launched a number of forays forward.

Their attacks were repelled, however, and Berko held on for a valuable win which leaves them a point clear of Welwyn Garden City at the top of the table.

The defeat of their local rivals came on the back of a 3-1 win over Stotfold on Saturday which was largely secured by burst of two goals in four minutes.

Stacey Field, the division’s top scorer, got the ball rolling for Berko with a close-range finish before Dan Jones laid on a second for Sean Coughlan.

Leading 2-0 with less than five minutes on the board, Berko would be forgiven for taking their foot off the gas.

They had other ideas, however, and made it 3-0 with 36 minutes played when Stuart Deaton headed in Munday’s header across goal.

A second-half penalty for a handball by Ashley Morrisey meant Berko’s clean sheet was muddied, but it mattered little.

Jets’ weekend was brighter than their mid-week display as they fought hard for a 2-2 draw with Holmer Green.

They were off the pace in the first half and were duly punished for being so as Green converted a penalty and made the most of a Rob Partington error.

The double salvo from Green left Jets facing a tough task to take anything from the game.

It was one they rose to though, and Nick Kerley got them back onto the game with a stunning 25-yard effort.

Jets were given a further boost with 20 minutes top play as a Green player was shown a second yellow for kicking the ball away in an attempt to waste time.

Jets claimed the point their play deserved with six minutes to play when deep cross found Ned Clarke and he headed in.

Leverstock Green’s three game-winning run came to an emphatic end on Tuesday as they went down to a heavy 5-1 loss against Hadley.

Shane Wood’s failure to clear in the 16th minute was punished by Hadley as they went ahead through Lewis Francis’ strike.

They were level just three minutes later when Matt Bateman capped a fine solo run with a neat finish.

Francis doubled his money to restore the Hadley advantage and Cameron Ferguson’s deflected shot made it 3-1 ahead of half-time.

Green never looked like mounting a comeback in the second half and goals from Justin Thomas and Jermeel Jno-Baptiste completed the scoring.

Tring Athletic were unable to bounce back from their loss to Leverstock on Tuesday of last week as they went down to a 4-2 defeat to Leighton Town on Saturday.

The victors were assisted by some abject Tring defending which meant goals from Chris Blunden and Mark Riddick meant little in the loss.

Tring’s clash with Edgware Town tomorrow has been postponed due their opponents’ commitments in cup competition.

They are back in action the following Saturday, when Harpenden Town pay a visit to Cow Lane in the league.
