Troy Deeney used his programme notes for Saturday's late show with Southampton to set his own record straight on his future.

West Brom, Newcastle and Everton have all been keeping an eye on the 29-year-old, if reports are to be believed, amid a season of inconsistency for the Hornets captain, and the man himself has distanced himself from thinking about his future.

He was surprisingly dropped for the Saints clash after playing, scoring and making another against Bristol City the previous week, but made a significant impact from the bench when introduced for Ben Watson at half-time.

He said in The Hornet: "I'm sure other people have different ways of putting things into perspective, but you've certainly got to have at least an idea of how you're going to box things off and let them pass by when there are people trying to put stuff right in front of your face.

"It's important to retain your focus on what's in front of you, and not get too far ahead of yourself with big plans for this or that.

"So nothing changes for me - there's no point. What will be will be and it's the job of every pro at every club to get on with it and do what they're paid to do."

It took Deeney until last weekend to score his first goal in open play this season, but that has not been helped by playing catch-up to his team-mates following a summer operation, which was entirely beyond his control.

But he was less blameless for missing seven games across the winter period, following two suspensions from the Football Association.

Deeney added: "It can take me a while to build into the season sometimes, and it's been true of previous years. But when I'm up and running, and at full pace, I'm difficult to handle.

"I'm starting to feel myself much more; sharper in training and completely injury-free too, not having to worry about pushing my body harder and harder."
