Richarlison’s failure to complete 90 Premier League minutes under Javi Gracia has raised more than the odd eyebrow, so too has the Brazilian’s emotional response to being replaced.

Gracia’s decisions have not been without reason, but have been met with tears and the tossing of gloves to the turf from a frustrated and emotional Richarlison.

The Watford boss says the regularity with which Richarlison is replaced is to do with little more than a desire to get the best results for Watford, rather than any underlying issue.

“You know when I make a decision I am thinking about the team, not just one person,” he explained.

“I understand Richarlison wants to play more times, but there are more players and other situations.”

After starting the season in flying form, Richarlison has lost the swagger which saw him frighten defences for fun and looks a shadow of his early-season self.

He arrived at Vicarage Road fresh from a full season playing for Fluminense in Brazil and the assertion he may need a break is one which holds water.

Gracia agrees the winger is struggling with fatigue, but says Watford’s busy schedule means he may need to soldier on until the season is over.

“Maybe he needs more time to rest, but, in this moment, we don’t have it,” he said. “We need to make an effort and if he plays 60, 70 or 90 minutes, he needs to try do his best and help the team.

“That is the most important thing at the moment. After, on holiday, he will rest.”

Gracia’s penchant for replacing Richarlison has prompted some to imply the pairs’ relationship is a rocky one.

The Watford boss said he has not spoken to Richarlison about his current drop in form and says he has strong relationships with each member of his squad.

“I always try to be close to my players – not only with Richarlison,” he said.

“You know with Richarlison, he is 20-years-old so sometimes I do not need to speak with him. I don’t like to speak only about Richarlison.”
