It’s fair to say Anfield has been far from a happy hunting ground for Watford since their return to the Premier League in 2015.

Two visits to the famous Merseyside venue have ended in convincing victories for the home side, most recently in the form of a 6-1 drubbing in November 2016.

That Liverpool side bore many of the hallmarks which have continued to define Jurgen Klopp’s this season as Watford were unable to contend with a free-flowing attack.

Today’s hosts have scored 68 i9n the league times this season and, in Mo Salah, possess a player operating at the very peak of his powers.

The Egyptian has 32 goals to his name this term, the first of which coming against the Hornets at Vicarage Road on the opening day, and leads the race for the Premier League golden boot.

Javi Gracia’s men will, though, have to contain more than Salah if they are to add to the famous 1-0 win which Tommy Mooney’s goal sealed in 1999.

That success is to date Watford’s only win at the famous ground in their history and one of only five Watford have enjoyed in 29 meetings with Liverpool.

Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have ably supported the goal hungry Salah with 22 and 14 goals respectively and are likely to complete the Reds’ attacking triumvirate this evening.

Liverpool may have been lethal in front of goal, but their porous nature at the back will give Watford some encouragement at the other end.

The 34 goals shipped by Klopp’s men is the most of any of the sides in the Champions league places and second only to Arsenal, 41, of teams in the top seven.

Regardless of Liverpool’s’ defensive flaws, Watford’s own struggles on the road since Gracia’s arrival offer a caveat to any encouragement provided.

They are yet to score away from home under the Spanish boss and Liverpool’s unbeaten record at home in the league this term make Anfield a tough place to start.

Add to the mix Liverpool’s need to bounce back from a painful 2-1 loss to bitter rivals Manchester United last Week, and Watford’s task looks a daunting one.

The chance to potentially move 12-points clear of danger and up to ninth in the table is the carrot which will inspire them to overcome it, however.
