Sebastian Prodl has backed compatriot Daniel Bachmann to have a successful career in the Premier League, providing the keeper is given the chance to impress.

Bachmann signed a three-year deal with Watford in July last year, but has yet to feature for the Vicarage Road club.

While chances to impress have been in short supply, Prodl insists the 23-year-old, who has been capped 21 times at Under-21 level by Austria, has the quality to prosper in England’s top tier.

Prodl said: “He’s a good goalkeeper and he’s got a chance to become a Premier League goalkeeper. I just hope he gets his chance one day, either here or somewhere else.

“We might see him somewhere, someday in the Premier League.”

With Bachmann and Prodl both hailing from Austria, it is only natural that the pair have common ground and get on well.

At 23, Bachmann is very much in the infancy of his career as a keeper while the 30-year-old Prodl has vast experience under his belt, including three seasons in the Premier League.

The centre-back says he has made an effort to help Bachmann settle in England and says doing so is part of his role as a senior player at the Vicarage Road club.

“Of course I am trying to help and I’ve been in the business for 12 years now and 10 years in the top leagues,” he said.

“I’m willing and trying to help him, maybe being a role model. I am not trying to be a role model just because I am experienced player.

“I need to prove that my attitude is right and try to be a leader.”

Heurelho Gomes’ demotion to number two behind Orestis Karnezis has cast doubt over the Brazilian’s future at the club in recent weeks.

Indeed, Javi Gracia opted to use Bachmann on the bench in the defeat at Arsenal after Gomes had missed a week of training due to personal reasons.

At 37, Gomes, who remains a firm favourite among fans, is in the winter of his career and there could well be a window to replace him as Watford’s number one.

Karnezis is certainly winning the race to do so at the moment, but Bachmann, along with talented teen Pontus Dahlberg, will look to provide competition next season.
