A World Cup passing by without the Netherlands’ involvement is a rarity.

That will, however, be the situation in Russia this summer after the Dutch missed out on football’s biggest competition after losing out in a qualifier against Sweden.

The disappointment hit particularly hard for Daryl Janmaat as the Watford man missed a chance to go to the World Cup with his country.

It is the second major tournament Holland have not been at, after failing to reach Euro 2016 in France, and Janmaat is eager to rebuild under new manager Ronald Koeman.

“It was a big shock, but we missed the Euros as well. We have a new manager now and hopefully we can have a new group where everybody starts at zero,” he said.

“I know the new manager, I have worked with him and I am really confident he can bring Dutch football back to where it belongs.”

Janmaat’s Holland took on England in Amsterdam on Friday and he will hope to be involved against Portugal on Monday.

He was part of the side which lost over two legs to fail to reach Russia but his positive attitude about the future means he remains proud to represent his nation.

“I was in the last team and played. I was injured after that but I am always in the squad,” he said.

“It is always and honour to play and I would like to continue to play for the national side, especially now the new manager is here.”
