Troy Deeney has responded to the media reaction which followed the comments he made in a recent interview with YouTube channel XO.

The Watford skipper was quizzed on his relationship with Arsenal supporters, which has been sour since he accused the Gunners of lacking “cojones” in the wake of Watford’s 2-1 comeback win against Arsene Wenger’s men.

Deeney was roundly booed on Watford’s visit to Emirates Stadium last month and claimed in the interview with XO that he had “made Arsenal’s season”.

The comments inevitably caught the eye of various media outlets, but Deeney insists his words have been taking out of context.

“I know there’s been a bit of chat about that YouTube interview I did recently and some of the quotes that got twisted about a bit,” he wrote in his programme notes ahead of Saturday’s game with Crystal Palace.

“No one’s opinion in football is wrong. I’ve sat behind a bit of glass in a studio, and in the stands, and I’ve stood on the pitch.

“I was just reflecting that it’s really tough to truly understand the reason something happened unless you’re in the thick of it.”

Deeney’s season has been one defined by indiscretions and indifferent form as both injury and suspension have impacted on his ability to enjoy a run of games.

He was handed a retrospective three-match ban after digging his fingers into Joe Allen’s face before being sent off for a lunging challenge against Huddersfield Town.

Again Deeney says such moments are hard for those who aren’t playing the game to understand and says decisions are often made in the blink of an eye.

“Stop, rewind, pause; we all do that at home but it’s just one take when you are out there so it is so tough to translate that into the stands so everyone can really get it,” he said.

“There are split-seconds on the pitch which can make a massive difference. A poor pass into a full-back, bad control by a striker. Everything can have a big influence on that next 10 seconds.”
