Bovingdon are within touching distance of winning the Herts Senior County League title for the first time in the club's history after their march continued with a 2-1 victory over Broadfields.

Following the disappointment of their Aubrey Cup semi-final defeat against Ware Sports on Saturday, it was a case of job done for Lee Bircham’s men as they effectively moved to within four points of wrapping up the championship with their 21st win in 22 Premier Division games this season.

On a poor playing surface, the table toppers were punished for a slow start on Tuesday when Broadfields took a sixth-minute lead.

Bovingdon remained calm though, and were back on terms five minutes before the break. From a Jamie Eames corner, Martin Standen rose highest and left-back Ben Davis levelled with a well-taken volley.

The home side continued to look lively on the counter, but Bovingdon’s winner was to come with 10 minutes remaining when Dara Dada played in Kaan Fehmi and he was brought down for a penalty.

A lengthy delay then ensued but skipper Stefan Bailey kept his calm to tuck the spot-kick away to wrap up another three points.

Describing the pitch as “generally as bad a surface as I’ve seen in many years of senior football”, boss Lee Bircham said: “With the games coming thick and fast it would be nice to just be able to settle down a little and not have to keep making five to six changes every week. But that’s always been something we factored in and is why we chose to go for a big squad and juggle it about when we could.”

He added: "We’ve got another tough one Saturday away to Bushey and we just want to get as many points as possible between now and the end of the season."
