With the World Cup just around the corner the opportunity to fulfil childhood ambitions will be on the mind of footballers from a host of nations.

Watford’s Richarlison, while not part of Brazil’s squad in Russia, is no different.

The 21-year-old was touted as a potential wildcard for the five-time World Cup winners after making a fine start to life in the yellow of Watford.

A dip in form has ensured Brazil boss Tite overlooked the Hornets’ number 11 for his contingent heading to Russia.

Richarlison understands that decision and believes time is on his side to make an impression for perhaps the most recognisable footballing country in the world.

“When I got in the Premier League, I was expecting to be called by Tite, but he knows what he is doing,” Richarlison said.

“He said he was watching me, watching Malcom and watching [David] Neres. That made me very happy.

“I am only 21, so I have to dream high. I think yes to compete in the World Cup. I have to stay focused because that is what Tite says, they are always watching us.”

Brazil will be among the favourites to win the World Cup and claim a sixth title when the tournament gets underway on June 16.

They face Costa Rica, Serbia and Switzerland in the group stages and will be expected to make serene progress to the last 16.

They will face one of Germany, Mexico, Sweden or South Korea should they make it through the group stage of the competition and could even meet England in the quarter-finals.

Richarlison, who has 10 caps at Under-20 level for his country, will have to watch and wait for his chance in the future.

He will do so, as will the entirety of the football mad nation of Brazil, with the hope his compatriots can produce the goods and bring the World Cup back to South America.

“I’m happy for my team-mates who have been called up and I hope they bring the cup to Brazil,” he said.

“I’m rooting for everyone who is representing our country.”
