Miguel Layun helped Mexico to an historic win over Germany as they started their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 defeat of the holders.

The former Watford man, who now plays his football for Porto, completed the full 90 minutes as Hirving Lozano’s first half effort ensured the Mexican’s became the first side to beat Die Mannschaft at a World Cup since 2010.

They were good value for the win, which took them to the top of the Group F standings in Russia, and kept Joachim Low’s side at bay for much of the game.

The 2014 World Cup winners were repeatedly hit on the break and Mexico could easily have won by a wider margin, but for some wasteful finishing.

Layun impressed throughout the clash and will hope to build on his display when Mexico take on South Korea in their next game on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Valon Behrami played a key role in Switzerland’s shock 1-1 draw with World Cup favourites Brazil on Sunday evening.

The combative midfielder stayed close to Brazil’s star man Neymar and was key in containing a potent attack during his 71 minute outing.

Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock in stunning fashion with a curling effort from the best part of 25 yards, which found the net via the post.

However, the Swiss were not to be denied and snatched a share of the spoils when Steven Zuber headed in from a corner early in the second period.

Their leveller was not without its fair share of controversy as a clear push on Brazilian defender Miranda in the build-up went unpunished, despite VAR being in use.

The pair of positive results on Sunday came on the back of a less satisfactory opener for Odion Ighalo as Nigeria lost 1-0 to Croatia.
