Adam Masina has completed a medical at Watford ahead of sealing a believed £3.5 million switch to the club.

The Hornets are expected to announce the left-back’s signing from Serie A side Bologna on July 1.

His arrival is the fourth deal Watford have got over the line since the window opened and sees the 24-year-old join Ben Wilmot, Gerard Deulofeu and Marc Navarro in joining the Vicarage Road club.

He played 34 times for Bologna last season, helping them to a 15th place finish in the Italian top flight.

Left-back has been a problem area for Watford in recent times, with Jose Holebas all but unchallenged for his starting berth in the first XI.

Marvin Zeegelaar briefly provided hope of offering genuine competition after a bright start to life at Vicarage Road, but soon began to struggle in the Premier League.

The hope will be that Masina can, at the very least, present an alternative to Holebas, who at 33 is in the winter of his career despite being given a new two-year deal in January.

Masina also gives Watford an option further up the pitch and has been deployed as a left midfielder in the past.

This flexibility will appeal to Javi Gracia, given the Spaniard’s tendency to change formation and use personnel in multiple different positions.

Watford’s transfer dealings have proved to be productive in the short time the summer window has been open and they are quickly ticking a number of boxes.

Wilmot, at 18, has plenty of potential and adds numbers to an injury-plagued cohort of central defenders, while Navarro can play at right-back, centre-back and in midfield.

Finally, Deulofeu, providing he can find his best form, will add incisive quality in the final third next term.
