Nordin Amrabat has questioned the use of VAR at the World after he was denied a penalty during Morocco’s 1-0 defeat to Portugal.

Morocco had a big appeal for a first half spot kick turned down during the loss, which saw them exit the tournament at the group stage, after Amrabat went down under a challenge in the box.

The decision to wave away his appeals drew an animated response from Atlas Lions boss Herve Renard on the touchline.

Amrabat was left equally frustrated by the officials’ failure to use VAR to look back at the incident and called on FIFA to employ video technology on a more regular basis.

The Watford winger said: “I think we deserved a lot more. We deserved to win. We had five, six big chances, they created nothing.

“They were only defending. Even Cristiano [Ronaldo] was in their own half. They speak about VAR but if you don’t use it every time then it doesn’t work.”

Amrabat’s assertion that Morocco deserved more from the clash was backed up by the stats from a game in which Portugal took a fourth minute lead.

The European champions mustered just two attempts on target throughout the clash and rarely threatened Morocco’s goal after Ronaldo had taken his tournament tally to four in two.

Nonetheless, Morocco were wasteful with the chances they did create and found Rui Patricio on form when they did manage to work the Portugal keeper.
