Matt Wallace has vowed “to keep working hard to bigger and better things” after winning his third European Tour title in just 13 months and securing a first appearance in next month’s Open Championship.

The Moor Park-attached professional clinched the BMW International Open title after firing a seven-under-par final round of 65 to finish on 10-under par in Germany on Sunday, one shot clear of home nation favourite Martin Kaymer, Mikko Korhonen – and following a brilliant 61 – Thorbjorn Olesen.

The victory is the biggest of the 28-year-old’s career to date, moving him up to 11th in the Race to Dubai standings and to a career-high 66th on the Official World Golf Ranking. The former has added significance because it ensured Wallace has qualified for a first appearance at the oldest Major championship.

Having ended the third round two shots off top spot on a congested leader board following three wind-affected days, Wallace overhauled Olesen’s record-breaking final round thanks to a fine run of five birdies in seven holes on the back nine. But with Kaymer and Korhonen still out on the course and closing to within one shot, this year’s Hero Indian Open winner was preparing for a play-off when his triumph was confirmed.

Admitting he was “absolutely chuffed to get it done”, Wallace told the European Tour: “It’s brilliant to win here in Germany, it’s a great event, and to play against the likes of Martin Kaymer and the guys at the top, it’s a great field, and special mention to Thorbjorn for his round today. 61 is fantastic.”

Wallace’s was congratulated by Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn, who tweeted @thomasbjorngolf: “Nice one @mattsjwallace Another superb win!! Strong performance to get past clubhouse lead set by that amazing round by @Thorbjornolesen Big shout out to me 3 Danish friends in top 10”

Reigning Race to Dubai champion Tommy Fleetwood tweeted @TommyFleetwood1: “Great stuff @mattsjwallace on your 2nd win this season, your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Having risen to prominence with a historic six victories on the Alps Tour two years ago, achieved his European Tour card by winning the co-sanctioned Open de Portugal in May 2017, competed in the US Open twice and become a dual European Tour winner this year, Wallace’s career continues in an impressive upward trajectory. And it’s a path he intends to continue on.

He said: “This is great, it’s a step in the right direction again and we’ll keep working hard to bigger and better things.”

Wallace now heads into a busy, but potentially very lucrative part of the season, starting with this week’s HNA Open de France at Le Golf National.

The event is the first of the three successive premium Rolex Series tournaments, each carrying a prize fund of €7 million, with the Irish Open and Scottish Open to follow before the 147th Open Championship starts on Thursday, July 19.

Fellow Moor Park professional Callum Shinkwin is also set to compete at the home of this year’s Ryder Cup, having missed the halfway cut in Germany.
