Kiko Femenia and Marc Navarro were on target as Watford beat West Ham United Under-23s 2-1 in a behind closed doors friendly yesterday.

Wide man Femenia opened the scoring shortly before the interval and his Spanish counterpart netted the second from a free-kick shortly before the hour-mark, with the Hammers then scoring a consolation.

With Pontus Dahlberg in goal, the Hornets lined up in a 4-4-2 formation as Navarro and fellow summer arrival Adam Masina played as the two full-backs, with another new signing Ben Wilmot once again deployed in central midfield rather than his customary central defensive role.

Femenia made the breakthrough when he latched on to a ball forward, evaded the West Ham goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net.

The Hammers had a great chance to equalise eight minutes after the restart when they were awarded a penalty, but Dahlberg saved the spot-kick.

Watford duly capitalised on this let off when, having won a free-kick, Navrarro converted from the edge of the area to make it 2-0.

The Hornets’ Swedish stopper was helpless to prevent West Ham halving the deficit when a clearance from Sebastian Prodl rebounded off Nathan Holland and looped back over Dahlberg.

Watford: Dahlberg; Navarro, Prodl, Mariappa, Masina; Femenia, Wilmot, Charles, Pereira; Success, Jakubiak.
