Matt Wallace’s first round at a US PGA Championship ended in a one-over par 71 at Bellerive Country Club.

The Moor Park-attached professional went out in a level par 35 before a second birdie of his first round took him to one-under. But back-to-back bogeys saw him drop back to plus-one and into a share of 62nd place at the end of the opening day alongside players including Jordan Spieth, Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren, with Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods among those one shot better off at level-par at the St Louis course.

Playing in his first tournament since The Open at Carnoustie, the 28-year-old made par on the first three holes before dropping a shot at the par four fourth.

However, he got back to even with a three at the seventh and moved into minus numbers for the opening day with a second birdie at the par four 12th.

Wallace was unable to maintain that position though, dropping back to plus-one with consecutive bogey fives at 14 and 15.

The two-time winner on the European Tour this year will be among today’s early second round starters in what is his fourth appearance at a major.

Gary Woodland set the early pace on day one with a six-under par 64, one shot clear of fellow American Rickie Fowler.
