Matt Wallace achieved his first top-20 finish in a major and hailed the US PGA Championship “as the best event and tournament I’ve ever experienced”.

The Moor Park-attached professional finished in a tie for 19th place on seven-under-par at Bellerive Country Club, nine shots behind champion Brooks Koepka, who claimed his second major triumph of the year.

Following rounds of 71, 66 and 68 on Saturday – in which the 28-year-old hit the headlines after making his first professional hole-in-one – Wallace rounded off his fourth major appearance with a second successive two-under round of 68 to finish in a group which included Justin Rose.

Having started the final round at five-under, this year’s two-time European Tour winner played par golf until he dropped a shot with a bogey five at the 10th.

However, Wallace’s response to that setback was impressive as he made an eagle two at the 355-yard par four 11th and picked up another shot with a birdie three at 14.

The Moor Park professional’s ace had come at 16, but he experienced the other side of the coin on the same hole yesterday with a bogey four, only to ensure he finished his tournament on a high with a birdie four at 17.

Having tweeted how much he was enjoying himself on Saturday, Wallace said on the social media site after his final round @mattsjwallace: “WHAT CAN I SAY. The best event and tournament I’ve ever experienced. Thankyou STL. You guys were epic. @PGAChampionship”
