Adrian Mariappa has signed a two-year contract at Watford, tying him to the Vicarage Road club until the summer of 2020.

Having come through the Watford academy, Mariappa has 285 appearances to his name across two separate spells with the Hornets.

The 31-year-old made his debut for Watford in 2005 before spending spells at Reading and Crystal Palace between 2012 and 2016.

He returned to Watford two summers ago and, after rarely featuring in his first campaign back at the club, emerged as an important player last term.

With injuries sweeping through the Watford defence in 2017/18, Mariappa’s consistent fitness proved vital to the club and he made 30 outings in all competitions throughout the season.

Mariappa, who won Watford’s Player of the Season award in 2012, is among the more senior voices in the dressing room and plays an important leadership role with the likes of Troy Deeney and Heurelho Gomes.
