Troy Deeney gets top marks but Watford’s 3-1 victory over Burnley was the result of a good all-round team performance as Javi Gracia’s men made it six points out of six at the start of the season.

The skipper earns the highest rating for his goal and assist, but the two other players central to those two strikes – Andre Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure – were also among the top scorers.

Here’s how we rated the Hornets at Turf Moor:

Ben Foster – 6

The keeper dealt well in the main with the shots he had to field and looked to be decisive when coming from crosses, without fully convincing. One deflected save from a cross-shot almost resulted in a goal but for a fine Jose Holebas block.

Daryl Janmaat – 6

A game in which Janmaat had to prioritise his defensive duties, although he sought to get forward when possible. Watford were opened up at times down the Dutchman’s flank but he played his part when Burnley pushed on after equalising.

Watford Observer:

Craig Cathcart – 8

Another impressive display from the calming defensive influence, holding firm in the face of the Clarets’ aerial pressure before half-time. One challenge when Jeff Hendrick prepared to pull the trigger was outstanding.

Christian Kabasele – 7

Like his central defensive partner, had to stand firm in the face of Burnley’s get it wide, get in the mixer approach, but the axis he’s forming with Cathcart has got off to a good start this season.

Jose Holebas – 7

Aaron Lennon caused the left-back problems at times as Burnley sought to utilise his pace, but Holebas denied the former Everton man what looked a certain goal with a superb block. Like Janmaat, not the type of game where he was able to shine offensively, but again justified his inclusion.

Will Hughes – 7

Struggled to affect the game at times during the first half but was tenacious throughout, although this looked like it might get the better of him when he needlessly lunged into Stephen Ward, resulting in a booking just before the break. But Hughes was able to get more involved infield after the break and the manner in which he seized on Matthew Lowton’s stray pass, used Andre Gray’s run to drive forward before crashing a shot past Joe Hart again underlined his undoubted talent.

Etienne Capoue – 7

Another efficiently solid display, doing a lot of the essential graft in the centre of the park and providing an effective platform for those ahead of him to look to flourish.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 8

As suspected after shaking of his lack of pre-season minutes against Brighton, Watford’s Player of the Season was back operating at a high level. The manner in which he disguised a pass played at a perfect weight to set up Deeney’s goal was magnificent.

Roberto Pereyra – 7

The Hornets’ match-winner against the Seagulls wasn’t able to reach those heights on this occasion, but he remained a good attacking threat when the Hornets attacked on the counter before taking a firm grip on the contest.

Watford Observer:

Andre Gray – 8

The game couldn’t have got off to a better start for the striker, who was central to the move before superbly finishing Watford’s opening goal at his former club. His pace and movement caused the Clarets’ defence problems throughout, but his appetite for work was also integral in Watford defending from the front. It’s early days but on the evidence so far, a Gray-Deeney partnership is going to cause opposing teams plenty of problems.

Troy Deeney – 8.5

The indications against Brighton were good, and yesterday underlined it – the Watford skipper is getting back to his best. Deeney notched his first of the season with aplomb after setting up the first goal with a cross a winger would have been proud of. He’s fit, focused, fired up and is clearly enjoying his football - that's a potent combination.

SUBS

Ken Sema - 6.5

Replaced Gray for the final 25 minutes and played his part as Watford looked to shut the game down after establishing a two-goal lead.

Kiko Femenia - N/A

Was given his second run out from the bench this season as Hughes made way.

Isaac Success - N/A

Another to make a second appearance as a substitute, his cameo was notable for Lowton appearing to tread on his hand.
