WATFORD could start recruiting for next season in January if they continue to pull away at the top of the Championship.

The Hornets ended a mixed week - a 3-0 defeat to West Brom followed by a 3-1 away win over Norwich - a further two points clear at the top of the table and a similar cushion at the turn of the year would enable Aidy Boothroyd to entice potential targets with the lure of Premiership football.

"I am clear in what I want to do but obviously it depends on results," he said. "If we keep doing what we are doing then we can look ahead to next season but, at the same time, I don't want to disrupt what we are doing at the minute."

Mindful of the destabilising effect Faustino Asprilla had on Newcastle United in 1996 and Rodney Marsh on Manchester City in 1972, Boothroyd will not risk doing anything that might prompt his team to implode in the run-in.

But he is aware that the quicker he can get players in, the longer he will have to bed them in for next season. The manager is thought to be eyeing as many as seven new faces should his side reach the Premiership.

"We've been looking since August so we are prepared if we need to buy or bring players in on-loan in January," he said. "That fresh face in January always gives everybody a lift. But I'm happy at the minute. We've got a nice bit of momentum going, some nice rhythm to our play and a team that is winning."

In last season's transfer window, Boothroyd had great difficulty in selling the then Championship-bound club to players of the required calibre. Does he think the Hornets are a far more attractive proposition now they are on the up?

"It depends which players you are trying to sell it to," he said. "If you went for the type of players that I think we need then I think people will still be undecided.

"We are not proven at Premiership level yet and these are the type of players we need to add to what we've got. I don't want to get to a position where I know what my best team is because I've got much of a muchness. I'm thrilled with the quality of player I have got here but I feel we need that next level of player."

Watford flexed their financial muscles in August when they set a new club record by signing Nathan Ellington. You get the impression Boothroyd is setting his sights even higher to land the "exceptional" player that could cause a snowball effect and prompt other players of a similar ilk to follow suit.

"I don't think Nathan is a big enough hitter," said Boothroyd. "He is a big hitter but not big enough. We need that catalyst player that others will follow here.

"We have learnt some major lessons from last year about how we go about our business," he added. "I feel more equipped in terms of how we recruit, who we recruit and how we bed them in. But whether they come or not is another matter."

One player with the kind of Premiership quality that Boothroyd will be looking for is Adam Johnson, and the manager revealed there is no further developments on whether the winger will be allowed to stay beyond the end of his loan spell in December.

"We are taking it week by week and it will boil down to injuries, Boro's form and Gareth's thoughts as to whether he will come back or not," said the manager. "It's too early to tell at the minute and I'm sure it will be 11th hour stuff."

Do I detect a hint of regret on Boothroyd's part in the signing of Nathan "forever on the bench" Ellington?

Would be great to see us sign some real quality instead of lower division duffers like Hoskins and Williamson. However at the same time we need to get rid of the likes of Kabba et al who seem to be quite happy playing in the reserves as long as they are still on the pay roll.

However the signing of quality players neccessitates an immediate change in style....how much longer can the policy of territory over possession - a bassett trait that us older followers recognise straight away - continue to reap rewards?

Do you really think Kabba is happy to just be in the Reserves?

Mind you it would be a good idea to get rid of him...if you thought Hoskins and Williamson were bad guys then I reckon SK was worse.

More incisive brilliance Colin!

What more could a Luton boy like you want than Watford to do a Vialli again.....keep dreaming.

ps. How do you know Kabba is happy?.......general
ly teams play between 1 and 3 centre forwards and we have several more than that in case you hadn't noticed??? Presume you saw him down at Tesco's like you did Marlon and had a chat? Tell us more......

colin .. Your comments are again totally bemusing ,, how can you rate a player who has barely palyed any significant part in any game for watford ? ..
Now i wish to ask you to answer the following , how can you constantly attack a manager who has consistently got us to punch above our weight. When he arrived we were on the verge of relegation, result = he kept us up, the following season we were the favorites for relegation and had the lowest wage bill in the division, result = promotion (prob a season to early) .. Anyone who knows anything new we were going to struggle in the premiership and if you thought any different you were deluded, however We never once took a pasting and if we had avoided conceding silly goals in the last 10 mins the story would have been different, every other premiership manager said they new they had been in a game with Watford .. Now this season we are 8 points clear and still you moan.. Now dont you dare try and taint me with the happy clappers brush, because I too would like to see a bit of variety and a change in tactics now and again, but the fact is we are putting the points on the table and winning games, evolution doesnt and wont happen over night, give the guy a chance... For once, just once try and be a glass half full type of guy, rather than a glass half empty numpty all the time ....

I think Colin has a point. Given more time and money I could have got the club to the brink of the premiership.

Without getting into the ongoing watford Observer Yellow Army lovefest, it is clear that Betty could've done better in the transfer market. Some of that is clearly due to the fact that some players will not come to WFC (or wouldn't when we were bottom of the Prem) and yet of all the Jan signings, many, (Cavalli, Ashikodi, Rinaldi, Hoskins, Kabba) do seem to be superfluous to Betty's requirements even if R and C seemed impressive to many of us fans. The simple fact is we need to be paying millions for on-form talent such as Johnson rather than speculating on lower division possibilities. Still, i am hoping Williams and Francis will provide a solid midfield in the second half of the season and still keeping my fingers crossed that the Duke and McAnuff will come good over the two-thirds of the season that remain. It is still early doors...

Sing out all game tomorrow...

I don't think Aidy regrets buying Ellington, what I do think is that he was bought on the almost 100% positive assumption that Darius was leaving. Darius stayed and I fear we may have a lame duck on the bench. No doubting his ability at thi slevel but a 4.5 million man is not going to be happy on the bench and I think it may prove to be another poor buy. Not through judgment but through the fac that Darius has stayed and cemented his position. We HAVE to buy a quality midfielder and a full back.

We need players that will do a job in the Prem. Stewart, Doyley, Mahon, Williamson, Mariappa certainly wont.

SHOULD we go up Boothroyd needs to be ruthless with his transfers and move on the players who wont cut it. none of this "I'm going to give the players who got us there a chance" - not again!

Hopefully McAnuff and The Duke will come good soon

A little harsh on Lloyd judging by his performances so far this year!

Right now I'd say we need some central defence cover/competition. JDM out for a month and DS looks nothing without him. Marriappa is a great prospect but Jackson and MacKay are hardly the future. There's a bloke called Carlisle at Burnley who's decent.........
