Fulham keen to pursue King deal

2:42pm Monday 14th January 2008

FULHAM are believed to preparing to launch another bid for Marlon King.

Watford rejected a bid of £4m for the 11-goal striker last week and Roy Hodgson called Aidy Boothroyd over the weekend to discuss King's availability.

Boothroyd would have told the Fulham boss that King is not for sale but the Cottagers may well test Watford's resolve with an improved bid.

Even if the new bid was accepted and Fulham agreed to improve King's reported £25,000 a week wages, the striker may well reject the move on the basis that, at present, the two teams appear to be heading in opposite directions.

However by making the bid public on their website, Watford may be hoping to spark a bidding war similar to the one that netted them £9.25m for Ashley Young.

He's not worth 25k per week so we should sell him.
He's a good player but this is a ridiculous amount of money for us to pay any player while we are in the Championship.
If we can get 5m plus a decent player from Fulham then we should gratefully accept.

WatfordKev, Watford says...

Agreed - about the wages and the fee. 4m was probably a bit low, but I can't see WFC getting Young-type money for King. Young is er, younger, and has genuine England prospects. And I think WFC did very well to get 8/9m for him in any case.

Fulham need more than King to stay up....

all this talk of let him go is riduculous What do you want HENDERSON AND KING or Priskin and ellington wake up people KING must stay if we have any chance of going up who cares what he allegedley earns if we go up we will have millions and millions AND we must strenghten so messrs MR SIMPSON /ASHTON need to get the money sorted and let the manager spend some !!!

DJ, Herts says...
3:44pm Mon 14 Jan 08

So thats where the money has gone!!! So King is on 25k (that's 2m a year) Francis is on 16k, Hoskins is on 7.5k and Powell was paid 10k a week. Completely and utterly reckless. No wonder we are 2.6m overdrawn and don’t appear to have the money to redevelop the ground

If Marlon goes after AB's comments that he is simply NOT FOR SALE AT ANY PRICE, then AB can happily have my season ticket back. Crap football, cheap half truths, nothing coming in player wise and increasing disenchantment from a very loyal fan base which loves the club but just want to know what the hell is going on. This all looks like going very pear shaped to me. TerryandRay!

If we are paying king around the 25k mark them how much is NE getting for not playing?
If we do sell i just hope the club buys players for here and now and not players that might make it and can sit in the 2nd team

chris, the vic says...
4:19pm Mon 14 Jan 08

lets see what develops...at the moment for once I feel Aidy and the board have got it right. i doubt whether Marlon is on £25k a month and other wages may well be overstated.

Yes we do need to know what is going on and the AGM answered many questions, as indeed next years AGM will give us the complete picture.

As for AB's comments..maybe he says what he believes to be correct at the time but the goal posts get shifted.

I think by mid February we will know whether promotion is an option and what deals were done in January.

Yes we have been misled and let down but to what degree and even though i am anti all the spin i will still by my season ticket next year as win lose or draw GS and AB are a **** sight better than the administrators up the road

john, greece says...
4:46pm Mon 14 Jan 08

my view is that AB has not improved the side since being promoted last time around.
No amount of buyingor borrowing in Jan will be enough to get us in a strong position for next season if we were to be promoted.
So i dont see the point ingoing out and wasting more money on a bunch of mercenaries.Better to engender some true spirit in this club with young players who are hungry to succeed and to be part of our club.

Just as an aside i noticed Matt Oakley moving from Derby to leicester for 500K. i Thought that was not a lot for a decent midfielder who impressed despite being in a struggling team.

I find it incredible that anyone is shocked that MK is on as much as he is! You must live in the past and expect players to be on minimumm wage.

The last 5 years of football has seen most of the money from every club go to footballers.

If we sold Marlon, who do you replace him with? There seems to be this naivety that we can pick up a 20 plus a season goalscorer for less than half a million and pay him £250 a week.

Some of you really need to understand that football is big business and loyalty works both ways. Some one suggested Fowler and Hasselbank at the start of the season ( Colin we know it was you) their combined wages are in excess of £75k a week and they really are past it.

Keep King for promotion, fail in the pomotion bid he will be on his way for less than we will get now.

DJ, Herts says...
4:58pm Mon 14 Jan 08

Chris, you doubt Kingy is on 25k a week but he signed improved terms (as did AB) in the summer without extending the length of his stay. The money from the Premiership / Ashley Young must have gone somewhere. Looks like it has disappeared on players wages, poor transfer signings and directors salaries.

Roger, St Albans says...
7:04pm Mon 14 Jan 08

At his age King must be looking for one last "big money" move before he loses his value. If he was offered a three year contract at Fulham at £35k a week he would probably take it , and not worry about which league he might be playing in next year. The club could hardly stand in his way if he really wanted to go, and a fee of £5m+ would make it even harder to say no. In fact this might not be a bad scenario if it allowed Ellington to come to the fore and do what King did two seasons ago--rebuild his career with a promotion winning performance. Of course there is no Ashley Young to supply the ammunition this time around..... For what it is worth I think King will go, Watford will have a decent cup run and lose out on promotion via the play-offs, Aidy will stay and we will be having this debate again at the same time next year.

neil, says...
7:08pm Mon 14 Jan 08

DJ- Calm down and d some work on your maths mate, 25k a week is not 2m a year, or anywhere like it. And anyway we have to pay the going rate, would you go on half the going rate for your job, just cos u liked the boss?

aidy, home says...
8:07pm Mon 14 Jan 08

compared to the bloke on the street 25k is a lot of money. But I am well satisfied with the wages we are paying marlon. i do not want this club to risk its financial future but i also do not want to risk the short term opportunity by selling king at a pivotable time in the season. quite simply, i think boothroyd will test his chairman's resolve. if sold without his consent, then that could send out many messages because i do not believe boothroyd will allow king to leave right now. why do we feel need to make the bid public, that is my concern?

Mark, Watford says...

At least Marlon has generally earnt his wages unlike some of our newer signings who either sit on the bench or in the Reserves.

Let Marlon go to Fulham for Bouazza + 3 million, Boozie could do the job that Ashley did but this time supplying the Duke.
At least this way there will be some transfer activity, I'm getting frustrated checking papers and online for some dealings!! we don't need anymore forwards, we need some creativity in the middle to provide them and some decent defenders...Job done.

25k a week for a player who has only ever has one decent season is a lot of money to say the least. King has hardly been on fire this season - just as I predicted. If the greedy board want to sell him - which the publicising of the Fulham bid would suggest - then there is little Boofers can do - he remains a puppet of Simpson to this day.

In the final analysis we have players who can score goals - what we dont have at the moment are the players who can create them and this is my biggest frustration.

If Boofers thinks that this cheaply assembled bunch of lower division no hopers can achieve promotion then, clearly, he is a man in denial.

We need some flippin creativity in the middle and some pace and cover at the back, not to mention a left winger who can actually go past defenders and whip in a cross - Powder puff MacAnuff is another useless flop.

I think we all need to come to terms with the fact that this season is going to be one of frustrating under achievement...our slide down the league is only just beginning. I can see Charlton scoring a hatful on saturday...and if you look at our away games then I think its fair to say we will lose a large majority of those.

Responsibility must rest soley with the manager...he put this load of crap together...and he is blindly / stubbornly refusing to stregthen sufficiently....oh but we signed Ainsworth oohhhhh yippeeee!

Another lower division donkey who will rot in the reserves.

Nothing will change until this useless prat of a manager is booted out!

Voice of reason, Watford says...
9:23pm Mon 14 Jan 08

Colin has reiterated what I've eluded to, but in a more Colin type of analogy, which only he can do. I agree with what he's put up until booting the manager out, he has never, to my recollection, stated who he would replace him with, but I do find it remarkable how Warnock has turned things around at Palace, wouldn't surprise me that they replace us in the play off stops.

Mark, Watford says...
9:44pm Mon 14 Jan 08

The most boring part of his posts is when he says for example this week "Charlton will score a hat-full" (its the same each week - we would be on -60 or something if he was right!) after going on about how we don't create enough which might well be a valid point with as he puts it our inffective lightweight midfield without any talk about the defence
being bad.

I'd like to know where Colin thinks we should be because he always goes on as if we are some massive club who should be in the Prem just because we spent a few bob.

Ofcourse missing out in the play-offs would be disappionting but hardly the end of the world...and that is the only way the "useless part" would probably leave/get the boot as he so wishes.

Voice of reason, Watford says...
9:50pm Mon 14 Jan 08

Going off topic here just for the moment, if anyone is interested, wont blame you if your not but..............
Vialli is rumored to take over as manager at Q.P.R, shame we've already played them twice, how good would it be to finally get our own back on him or would Colin like him back instead of Aidy?

Mark, Watford says...
10:32pm Mon 14 Jan 08

I just think there are some people on here who expect us to be in the Prem come May and probably stay up whereas others don't.

Its a conflict of interests..some have higher expectations than others.

However it is fair to say the football is not good (maybe even worse than under Lewington who lets fact it just had a very average squad) and we have spent money on poor players much like Vialli did although not to the same extent (yet)

Some of Aidys earlier signings were excellent, King of course and Shittu, Spring and Smith. Also inspired loan signings of Foster and Johnson. I'm worried now that Burkinshaw has left the networking may have dried up too. To me KB was a reassuring figure with a wealth of knowledge and contacts, just the person for the current situation.

I thought it was common knowledge that MK was on that amount a week. Worth every penny when you think where we would (or may be) without him.

Pay him the money. This amount of money is small beer, in the world of football.

AB has said that he is going to give Fulham the 'hands off' treatment and the club say they have no intention of letting him go so let's see how strong the club are.

I wouldnt be suprised if Ellington is on similar to MK.

If MK does go then we are in a bad way,striker-wise,as Ellington is very unlikely to come good. The potential just doesnt seem to be there.

So Marlon has hardly been on fire this season? He has still scored 11 goals though, hasn't he? As for last season, have you forgotton he missed most of it through injury, but still scored 4 in 11 appearances? I'll stick to my view ie you don't win promotion by selling your best player. I think we can still be in the top 2 come May, but it needs some investment in the next couple of weeks. Alternatively, maybe try playing 3 in midfield, with the third man playing a defensive holding position (maybe Al when he's fit?)I'm convinced we have the quality up front to be successful, provided the supply from midfield is good. We haven't turned into a bad side overnight - fans of other teams rate us to be one of the best. If you need any proof, look at the Southampton News site the day after we beat them down there. I await the slagging for my "proposed" changes to formation from all you experts!!

That's what I thought too!
I think that Fulham are trying to unsettle Marlon to force the issue. It would be the age old problem of trying to keep a player who has had his head turned and wants to speak to them/go to the "bigger" club. We could find that we have no option than to accept an offer rather than have him not giving his all and being without him anyway AND without the cash. And for all the people that will blame Aidy for this if King goes, do they REALLY think that the manager has much say in a sale if the board wants the money?? I just hope that if he goes, the money is reinvested properly - on the team. £5m, would that be a bid to test Middlesborough for Johnson?

Possibly both if you believe the Sporting Life website - MK going to Glasgow Rangers for £2 million + Daniel Cousin. If true, watch out any drinkers in the WFC dressing room!

Mick, Bray says...
1:58pm Tue 15 Jan 08

On the business and sense side of it 5m + LC (rumour) seems good.We need a natural LM,CM and a LB.LC was bought in the summer for 2m. I think that this deal is a good one if he is allowed to use the money to strengthen elsewhere. If we do not get promotion then MK will go in the summer for around 4m tops anyway. There is no doubt the fulham offer is a good one!

On the downside it sends out a bad signal to the players and fans UNLESS other players are brought in. Remember Brum sold upson (6m)last year at this time to WH and still got promotion by using the money in bringing in several new faces.I think King has had a decent season but looks like he has lost a yard of pace to me.Remember all his goals came in a 12 game period. Quiet at the start of the season and quiet in the last six weeks.

Thanks for those genunie fans who post but sadly most seem to be knee-jerkers almost wishing for the club to fail I think.

Agree with you Mark about the insults. Uncalled for. However you resorted to one. GS and Tim Shaw together saw the club through a tough time. Tim Shaw still has a big stake in the club (1.4% according to AIM...a lot more than Messrs Ashton and Wilson at 0.1% combined). GS was also part of it when Vialli was appointed.
I don't think Ray Lew gets credit. Two cup semi's on a playing budget of a third what it must be now...plus Ashley, Hameur, Jay D, Rich L, Lloyd D, through the youth set up or from Northwood (Colin will admit JDM is not lower division crap...I think. Compare that to ABs aquisitions.

I agree that A Johnson certainly did make a difference, and like it or not we have lost form since he left. Personally at age 45 for the first time in my life (almost cannot believe I am typing this) I am getting sick of football.
Players with inflated ego's, salaries more than any of us can ever imagine, cheating, diving, taking corners outside the circle, mouthing off at refs, it just seems to get worse and worse. The game I love seems such a distant memory from the one I played as a kid and young man. There is a serious lack of sportsmanship, player loyalty and manager loyalty - yet the fans remain loyal.
Every january, as with every summer, players are linked with this club and that, absurd prices are placed upon these players and we have chaos, rumour and lies to fill out the papers during these times. I really don't care if Marlon goes or stays, I really don't care anymore if there are dismissals from the backroom staff and I really don't care what the Watford Observer has to say anymore. The relationship between club and paper is finished, the relationship between club and fans suddenly seems very distant (ironic with the wonderful news about Al Bangura) so I guess I'm just giving up. Ironically I watched on youtube the clip of Barry Endeans 1970 FA Cup Quarter Final 1-0 winning goal over Liverpool - it was so good to see that again. I doubt there are many players in the modern game who could match their commitment and passion - yes, these days they are obviously more skilled, better educated with diet, exercise etc, but not half the man of the players of yesteryear. Do I sound like a grumpy old git - probably. I'm not, I'm just concerned for the future of our game. Even Liverpool FC wouldn't help Luton with last week gate reciepts. As if they need the money...

WatfordKev, Watford says...

I don't want King to go, as he is far and away crucial to us escaping the Championship via the front door, but if he wants out and Foolem are going to stump up good money what's the point in keeping someone who inevitably won't be giving it 100%?

As such, in today's climate, I would imagine 5m or above would be good business for WFC. (Bent at 16m was a brilliant, crazy aberration.)

All season we have been punching above our weight, including when we were 11 points clear. I certainly came away from several of those wins very happy with the points but not clappy about how we'd done it, if only because it seemed obvious that

a) were we to go up, the current style is unsustainable - proven last season

b) large-scale changes would be required in the starting XI - again, painfully proven last year.

c) we'd probably eventually get found out even in this League. And weren't we just - the day the chickens came home to roost was the home game v WBA. Fair play to them, they were a lesson that you don't have to hoof it out of this division.

If things stay as they are I think we will finish somewhere in the top half, but below the top six.

Who honestly actually wants to get promoted. Boothroyd isnt good enough, the squad certainly isn't and the board wouldn't provide the backing. We're a mid table Champ side - deal with it

Well exactly...

I'd rather stay down here and be a bit incosnsitent rather than lose 3/4/5-0 each week thanks!

Aidy clearly hasn't learnt,we have a poorer squad and no money if this newspaper is to be believed...from what was said any promotion money might have to go towards loans and groudn development.

Be nice to actually know who is telling the trust or not eiher way!

The board are a bit PR positive spin happy but the on here some posters are totally the opposite..

Is there any middle ground to be found liek you can on Gloryhorns or WFC forums?

I can see the arguments for not wanting to be promoted, but by the same token supporting a club seems a bit pointless when you don't want to see your side playing in the top flight... how would Wigan have been classified around 10 years back? Or Watford 20-odd years ago?

This must be the only fans forum where supposed supporters do not want to get promoted. Go and support someone else. I know we are not a big club but get real.Do you think Wigan,Fulham & Boltom think they will win the PL!!!!!!!!

Hold the front page!! watford fans stoop to a new low on message boards. Now they don't want to get promoted.

I can't belive what i am reading! What fan that supports their team does not want to reach the promised land of the prem.

It is worth £60 million now. Blimy even if we did go up and straight back down can we really afford to do without £60 million?

Staying in the Championship will be a disaster for us. If teh rumours are true all the money has gone. We would be forced to sell players would only have one more season of paracute payments left.

Yeah its not nice seeing us get beat week in week out so i do understand the comments.

I think we got promoted too early last time, but given the chance I'd go up anyday and hope that Boothroyd gets the money to rebuild.

Its such a tough leauge as we saw last time but you just never know!

I dont think anyone means they dont want to get promotion...what they are really saying is yes we would love to be promoted/yes we would love the sky money if it was to be mainly invested in the team BUT at present the way the team are not financially backed by the board and not well managed we have no chance of being promoted...our current form is at the level of a club in the bottom four overall and we have no chance.

So Mick and Steve whilst I agree with you ...you miss the point of what Mark etc are trying to illustrate...or alternatively you are boofers and Ashton!!

In the final analysis it is not our supporters whose attitude needs to change it is those who manage the club and if you are so certain that those who criticise the supporters who are unhappy ask yourself why when Fulham first bid for Marlon it was dismissed out of hand within a couple of hours but this time 24 hours plus on and a million more we have not heard whether the deal has been rejected or accepted. Maybe the ambition of the fans is not matched by others...what do you two think?

Depends whether you want to compete in the Premier League or just be there
