WATFORD have accepted a £5m bid from Fulham for Marlon King.

Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson saw his £5m cash offer for the 11-goal striker accepted this afternoon and King will have a medical at Craven Cottage before signing a lucrative three-year deal. King is likely to make his debut against Arsenal, his boyhood club, on Saturday. Collins John, who rejected a move to Watford this time last season, will join on loan with a view to making the move permanent in the summer. For the full story, see tomorrow's Watford Observer. Exactly. I thought their previous offer was for 5m. Perhaps it actually is 5m plus a player? But 5m was what was quoted as the latest offer on Tuesday.

Boothroyd said: "At this time of year there is a lot of speculation and when you have your good players and you are successful then people are going to come for your players.
"But it is quite simple - we don't need to sell. Especially to a club who we might be changing places with.
"In order for a player to move I've got to want him to go, the player has got to want to leave, the money has got to be right and there has got to be a replacement.

"None of those four criteria are being met so I don't care how many times it gets flashed across Sky Sports News or how much speculation there is, I want him to stay so he stays. That's it." So there you have it boofers wants king to stay, but do Ashton and Homer????????

No, the news is he has gone!

5 million for Marlon today is good business, he may still retain an exsquisite first touch but he has lost that half a yard of pace which made him so dangerous two years ago.

I say take the money!!!

here you go £5 Million for the player Boofers said he wouldn't sell for £60 Million plus 2 carthorses Collins John and Bocanegra.

What do you clappers say to that?

realist, MK says...
3:15pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Well if he goes Colin do you think AB has ANYTHING to do with setting a price? I fhe does then he's the 1st manager in football to do so. The board will accept or decline an offer as you well know and if he goes it will be disappointing to say the least but life and WFC will go on. I will still supporet them, you will still hate them and the world will carry on turning.
Clap clap clap...at least it isn't moan, whinge and abuse.

We have to remember that we are,and will always be,a selling club.
It's sad when any of the players we like leave but the PL clubs have so much more money(and prestige)that all our players want to play in it.
The sad thing is Hoofroyd will probably only get 3M of this while the rest goes to the directors.
Our squad needs a big increase in quality and selling our best player isn't going to help.
What happened to the 30M from playing in the PL plus the money from the Ashley and Hameur sales?

Every successful team is built around a spine of key defender, key midfielder & a key striker........fact. And ours is?

chris, the vic says...
3:28pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Under a week ago Boofers said according to the BBC...players only go if i want them to and then three other conditions have to be met...they have to want to go/ the money has to be right and we have a ready replacement....At the time of the £4m bid nonre of those conditions have been met.

So it follows a week ago Marlon didnt want to go...we had no replacement and £4m wasnt enough...

Therefore, unless Aidy has changed his mind/Marlon has changed his mind/£5m is enough and we have found a replacement

there seems to be no decision to make..it is a thanks for the offer but NO...

Alternatively we shouldnt believe a word that comes from the BBC...or from Aidy or it was never Aidy's decision..

I guess we will have to wait and see and then decide...

Realist - just tell me, what happened between Boothroyd's very blatant and precise statement at the weekend (which a poster has reprinted above) and now, if the deal does go through?

An extra £500,000? Apparently we didn't need the money and we loads of it according to the manager, so it can't be that.

King wants to go? Well according to Boothroyd he didn't at the weekend, so unless he's had a rapid change of mind . . .

The same could be said of Boothroyd - he didn't want him to go at the weekend, so has he changed his mind?

The fourth thing Boothroyd said was a replacement had to be in place. So it must be that - mustn't it.

Nope it's none of the above.

More spin, less truth.

realist, MK says...
3:40pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Golden,
All I was doing was making the point that Aidy does not make the final decision to seel a player just as he can't just go an buy just anybody. He may well want King to stay but if the board want to accept the offer then that is the end of it. The same goes the other way, I dare say Idy would love to buy Ronaldo but he isn't going to be able to - the board won't let him. Yes I know that is probably an unfair comparison but let's say then that he wanted to bring back Heidar and Bolton said yes but for £6m....now we may well be able to afford that but the board would almost definitley not sanction it. Aidy said he wants £60m for King (obviuosly not realistic but pointing out that he wants to keep him) but the board probably have a figure of about 10% of that in mind that they will accept. Do you not answer to anyone when making decisions at work? I'm just being realistic. This is why in europe managers are only called head coaches -they deal with the team but have no authority as far as the financial side goes.
Anyway, let's wait and see what happens and as I say I will still be supporting them ieven if some of the more fickle out there only want to support a premier league team or a team that play sexy football all the time.
Ta ta and clap clap clap.

4:03pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Realist - like you, I support Watford. I don't want them to fail, nor do I get any pleasure from watching defeats, players leave or anything else.

I have followed the team, regularly both home and away, for more than 30 years.

However, I feel as disaffected now as at any time in my supporting lifetime (and that includes some bad times, as you are well aware!).

I just cannot accept that the club see fit to say one thing, then do another - time and time again. And they expect us fans just to take it opn the chin, without question, complaint or criticism.

Do they think we are stupid? Blindly allied to the cause? Unable to put two and two together correctly?

Yes I do answer to people in my line of work - however, before I make a statement to anyone else, I first ask those that I answer to whether what I am going to say is in line with their thinking, policy, budgets, targets etc.

I think my future in my job would be pretty grim if I didn't do that and just said what I thought was best - or I did consult with my directors, and then just said something else.

Are we saying that Boothroyd made his statements about King without knowing the club had a price at which they would sell?

Or are we saying he ignored that and said it anyway?

Either way, it amounts to poor managment of the situation and a general disregard for the intelligence, emotions and passion of the supporters.

Did Boothroyd really want to sell but didn't want the fans to think ill of him, so he could then defend his position later when a deal was done?

Or did he know King wanted a transfer but decided not to tell us, so that King might look the villain of the piece when he had a 'change of heart'.

I'm all for supporting through thick and thin, but when both the manager CEO and Manager make public pronouncements about no need to sell, no need for cash, not wanting to sell etc, and then days later the sale goes through, I think I have every right to feel very bitter.

Of course, this deal may not go through - but even then, I think the way the club handles itself in such situations leave plenty to be desired.

Having said all that, let's hope for the right result on Saturday.

Voice of reason, Watford says...

Fulham Website - The Club can confirm that it has made an improved offer to Watford FC for the transfer of Marlon King, which has been accepted.

The player will now undergo a medical at the Club’s training ground. Further details regarding his potential move will be communicated at the appropriate time.

yellow fever, Watford says...
4:11pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Money talks, the club's being run as a business and the King deal looks good on paper, if you are a businessman as Simpson, Ashton and I fear Boothroyd are.
Unfortunately, for the fans it simply leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and casts a gloomy feel over the impending visit of Charlton in 48 hours time.
Colins John is no replacement for King, on form or not. John has made it more than clear in the past that he does not want to play for us, so is unlikely to show any passion.
Can't blame King for going to Fulham, although they're not likely to be a Premiership club next season he'll likely still find that he gets more service from a better team.
Chris Coleman left Spain yesterday - I wonder if he fancies a stay in Vicarage Road?

Give me the song to ra-ra-ra along to while we digest this story.

And, blind followers of the club, let's not forget that we have to pay Forest a sell-on fee and if we want to sign Collins John, we'll have to pay Fulham. So, that £5m suddenly drops down by a large chunk.

Can someone tell me what happened between the statements made by Ashton and Boothroyd about having lots of money, not needing any more, not wanting to sell etc etc?

For months on end those of us who have criticised and questioned the club on here have been told we have no faith, the club are telling the truth, get behind Aidy and Co.

Can someone tell me, in the light of this charade, why us moaners are wrong and the clapping seals are right?

Andy, Oxhey says...
4:23pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Look it all will all turn out ok in the end. Marlon goes, allowing Ellington to become an automatic choice and hence justifying his fee. The club gain both a fee (i bet the improved offer is about timing of the cash and sell on fees as well as loan players) and sess the benchmark salary earner leave, and hence a saving on the wage bill. Loan players contracts are not on the balance sheet as 2/3 year contracts at £xx,000 a week are not a potential liability to be recorded. King has not really contributed a lot in the last few home games and you wonder if his heart is still in it at Watford. As for Chris Coleman he resigned when Keegan rang to offer him a job at Newcastle.

4:24pm Thu 17 Jan 08

Shame but life goes on. If he has had his head turned then he'll not want to play for us anymore. The board took the money, simple as that.
It isn't the 1st time the "crown jewels" have been sold and won't be the last. We are a selling club like 75% of the football league are. In the past we never wanted to lose the likes of Blissett, Barnes, Callaghan, Falco, Coton, Miller, Young and dozens before. It happens. Deal with it and support the club or stay away. Your choice. Simple. I will still go though.

unfortunately this is all too predictable and is a damning example of the effect increased player power has on the game. marlon's head has been turned by the lure of the premier league and even more money. as soon as a player expresses a desire to move on there is precious little point in keeping him, it is simply a matter of holding out for a decent fee and allowing him to move on.
i agree with the feelings of anger and disappointment on the back of boothroyd's statement a few days ago saying he would not be going but it would have been naive to take that as read. the club's propaganda machine has been in overdrive in recent years, desperate to portray the club in the best possible light, even if that meant alienating supporters.
in some ways, the most galling aspect of the deal is the arrival of collins john, who made it abundently clear last season he didn't want to play for us in the premier league. now, all of a sudden, he is willing to come and play for us in the championship. i dread to think how much he is being paid in order to change his mind.
for marlon to score 11 goals with the complete lack of service he has received all year is a decent achievement and he is well worth the £5m. if john scores more than five between now and may i will be (pleasantly) surprised.
it may well be seen by some as a lack of ambition by boothroyd and the the board but it could be argued that they had little alternative, and their hand was forced by marlon announcing he wanted to leave.
either way, the pressure is now on. the next two weeks will be pivotal to boothroyd's continued reign at vicarage road. buy well, and he will be forgiven, buy badly (or not at all) and he can say goodbye.

Realist - none of what you say is wrong and I admire your dedication.

However, surely even you must find it hard to understand and annoying to be told so definitively by two senior club officials that there will be no sale, only for the sale to happen a matter of days later?

Enough time hasn't passed for a quantum change of view from anyone, so you must agree that while they were saying one thing, they had a good idea something else was going to happen.

And that just ain't good enough, no matter how devoted you are.

So now we know you cannot believe a word that we are told.

Ashton said we have no need and Boothroyd categorically stated the four conditions but no doubt he met that with his vascillation.

As usual except when Elton was around with GT we have been sold down the river...GS will tell us its for the well being of the club and when he rebuilds the East Stand we can call it the SIMPSON stand...it may of course like the ground be near to empty...For sure we are not run by John Madjeski and Steve Coppell...I hope Royal fans know how lucky they are.

In meantime I hope the season tickets are cheap next year as I guess I will still support the golden boys but words like frustrated..disappoi

I think Aidy has his hands tied as I have previously posted and I expect that Marlon has been approached and decided that doubling his money at his age would be lovely - wouldn't we all. Don't like it all but it happens at almost every club and we just have to accept that we will never ever hold onto our best players for long. We just have to enjoy them while they are about. Sad fact of football.
Still, in 5 years time we will be moaning about the same thing with another player that we can't do without...probably some kid in the academy now or at a lower division club. Endless cycle.

Of course, the manager and chief executive, who stated publicly that King would not be sold, that we didn't want to sell, that we didn't need any money etc etc, will not be subjected to similar vitriole from the people who attacked this newspaper and its staff.

I think the comparison with Reading is interesting - How many good players have they sold (or expect to see gone by 31st Jan) in the last 2 years - Is it 4 or 6? I note Gunnarsen might be available as a Mahon replacement? On curret form Watford were not going to be promoted with or without King. The big problem with bringing in Colin John is of course the admission that Hoskins, Kabba, Priskin are not up to the job - perhaps we just have to hope that this signing is a return to the luck Boothroyd had with King and Henderson.

The worst part is we are getting Collins John, he is useless. We sell MK for 5M, a pre-arranged price of say 3M for CJ and we end up with a rubbish player and 2M? Worth it? Dont be stupid! I suggest if MK has gone by sat we all BOO CJ and AB when he comes out. Then turn our backs on him for 2 minutes before backing the team. It is the only way we can put our point across. Realist - again, your sentiments are right. This is modern football.

It's just I remember a time when Watford communicated more honestly and openly through more channels than they do now. There has never been such a desire to control every word said to the fans, and to try and find a positive spin (at the expense of accuracy).

If Boothroyd has got his hands tied, then perhaps you should consider speaking up about that on here more often, as I have done.

After all, if Boothroyd is a wonderful manager but is working under restraint, how much more will he take?

The question in my mind is this - did he and the others know all along how this would turn out? if so, their messages to the fans were as insulting as they were inaccurate.

I just find it a little hard to believe that the manager really didn't know more than he was letting on.

King could have done better for himself though he'll be back in the championship in 5 months time.

I think they were good when they 1st came but in my eyes they are changing for the worse. Again only my opinion but I reckon Aidy will be off at the end of the season because of players being sold off from under him. What manager wants to lose his best team? Especially when he is being told that they don't need to sell and then are. I just woory about what crap will come in next having watched a revolving door of bad managers over the years pre and post GT. Remember Perryman and Lee for example. I've supported Watford for over 40 years and have never been as close to throwing my season ticket is I am this afternoon.

In life and in business I have always been taught to be honest and to tell the truth and here is a man (Bothroyd) earning many thousands of pounds a week more than me throwing that truth back in my face. I feel sick.

He must have known last Saturday, when he made those comments about Marlon King, what was happening. You don’t suddenly wake up one morning and say I’ll sell my best player for a twelfth of what I said he was worth six months ago and for his replacement I will buy a player who couldn’t even get a regular game for Leicester City when he was loaned to them earlier in the season.

I have always said (to those who would listen to me) that Bothroyd in the perfect example of the Emperors new clothes in that he was all front and no substance. His obsession with facts and figures that were designed for baseball is frankly an insult to anyone who loves the soul of football. The unwatchable stuff that we saw last season and for all but a few games this and still people talk of him as a future England manager? God help England.

And don’t get me started on Ashton, another non fan who appears to be bleeding the club dry.

Thank goodness the Watford Observer is prepared to stand up to these bullies and print the truth. It seems the Trust and most supporters have been blinded to what is really going on. Wake up guys and do something before we don’t have a club to support.

two seasos ago there was a new hope at this club. Something is not right at this club anymore. Something very wrong. How can the spirit have been knocked out of our club. We as the paying punters and the people who come week in week out for most weeks in our lives deserve to know. The owners of this club will only be here for a short period while they try to blood our small club. They do not care. I think they should come to the town centre and explain themselves to the fans. DISgrace.!!!
We are the club the fans. We are the ones who sit in the cold and the rain through thick and thin and we deserve more. It seems the loonatics have finaly taken over the asylym.(scuse spelling).

Sure, AB comes off as a bit of a fool having made his comments last week, but I believe King's head has been turned by money and Premiership football (even if it's only for a matter of months).

£5m for King, who must've been lured to Fulham by a hefty salary hike.
Collins John coming the other way on loan people - remember that. ON LOAN. The £5m is (quote) 'guaranteed'. So we could quite easily pack John back off to Fulham at the end of the season if he really turns out as bad as some of you think he is.

To my mind this all stems from last season in the Premiership, that should have set us up nicely, ok it was always gonna be difficult to stay up but you don't want to sell your best players knowing that you're going down, then buy Championship players in readiness to get back up. Look at Derby, they are buying Premiership players for the Championship, they'll go straight back up, do we hear WBA...Charlton selling there best players? NO WE DONT, they want to go up, we obviously don't. God, what if Charlton stuff us at the weekend? There is a lot riding on that game for me, if we lose and lose badly I'm sorry to say that I will lose complete interest and wont bother attending until we have a change of board!!

Come on, I'm not going to believe Boothroyd didn't feed us a load of cobblers with his quotes.

And the £5m for King? Take off Forest's sell-on and you're getting down towards £3m - for own "crown jewel".

Stuart, contracts in football nowadays aren't worth the paper they're written on. I'm not disputing what you've said about the boards pay and bonuses etc.. I'm merely commenting on the fact that if a player wants to leave then he leaves, no point in keeping him if his heart's not it it anymore. Marlon's been superb for Watford, but so have others in the past, and they've been replaced and we move on. The same will happen now.

"In order for a player to move I've got to want him to go, the player has got to want to leave, the money has got to be right and there has got to be a replacement.

Just be honest and say we will sell our best players, get as much cash as we can and see if we can get promoted then come back down again and keep doing that if we are lucky. I'm sure Aidy (boofers as some of you clever people call him) has decided its for the best - no way would the other directors have forced his hand. Will we go up - no idea but we have no right to, we are a small club living way above the level we have any right to. Darren P, Rickmansworth

Before the sale of King I thought our net transfer spend was roughly zero since we were promoted in May 2006. Out, Young (£8m), Bouazza (£4M), Carlisle (£0.3M), Spring (£0.2m) and Gav M (£0.2) = £12.7. In = Shittu (£1.7M), Frances (£1.5M), Mcanuff (£1.7M), Ellington (£3.75M), Williamson/Hoskins (£1M), Williams (£0.5m), Priskin (£1M) = (£11.2). The wages paid to the "free transfer" of Powel, Jackson and Poom would easily eat away at the surplus.

All that said, it is still concerning where the rest of the money has gone especially as we have sold the corners of the ground for approximately £4M as well. Assuming the gate money was equal to the cost of paying the wages of the entire club, which is probably not an unreasonable assumption, especially as we got to the semis of the FA cup the club is left with the £10M from sky. Is this the money that is being put aside for the development of the East stand?

He refused to sign for us last season & by all accounts was very awful on loan at Leicester-City. Also we will have to pay a fee if we want him at the end of the season! So we will probably have to pay Fulham £1.5 to £2.5 million for him meaning not much of a profit on a striker Boothroyd wouldn't apparently see for £60 million!

Before we all get mad (and it is totally understandable why so many have - they are fans after all, and it is simply that they genuinely care) it might be prudent to see what else happens before then end of the month. If there are one or two 'solid' signings then maybe the overall squad (no man makes a team) will be better placed to get us promotion. The thing that looks so bad (I know it can be called modern football business) is when the manager and Ashton state so publicly that there is no need and will be no sale. I believe in supporting not slating the team and the manager generally. I also sent an email to Graham Simpson to complain about AB's appointment and he had the good grace to send a personal reply. I ate my hat on that occasion (and emailed GS again to say so) and believe we have one of the greatest young British managers in the game at the moment.

I have to say I hope I have to eat my hat again. This really is a ridiculous bit of 'business', especially in light of comments made in the past few weeks. At the moment I feel like we have blown our chances of promotion completely and that the board have been extremely short-sighted - surely they would make more money by WFC getting promoted?

I am pretty gutted. Yes MK may have slowed down and look like he doesn't care as much but he's still scored 11 goals this season and could have held the key to us going up.

If this decision has anything to do with AB then shame on him. If he has made the decision because King is disrupting the dressing room though, fair enough. I fear though it's just the board's decision and if that's the case then not only will we lose our best players, we will lose Boothroyd as well when he gets sick and tired of dealing with the dregs.

Really not happy and certainly not clapping at the moment. Let's just pray with Marlon gone we have a Thierry Henry leaving Arsenal moment and the rest of the team raise their game.

I wouldn't feel so bad if we had something to show for all this selling like a new stand, am I the only one embarrassed at the state of our main stand, and the board say we don't have the funds, yet they're building a load of flats on the back of the Rous and rookery, and this benifits us how?

Sky money was £17million
£1million reaching FA Cup semi final

So Marlon's gone (pending a medical of course). Sad, but such is life & we all have to move on. Years ago, the club survived and moved on from the sale of Cliff Holton, who was probably twice the player that MK ever will be.

What I'm interested in is seeing Saturday's team selection. If Collins John is in at the expense of Ellington, then I think we really need to start crying foul. From what I've seen of him (admittedly only highlights on the box), we already have 6 other strikers ahead of him in the pecking order. Surely Flam have a spare midfielder of full back we could have?

I'm fed up of people coming on here slagging of Boothroyd. The only other person to get into the Prem was Taylor. Yes, Boothroyd still has much to learn but for a manager he is extremely young. Thanks to Boothroyd bringing on players we have sold Young, Bouazza and King for almost £20 million. And how much did the three cost in transfer fees -- £500,000. I think that says it all, don't you.

Look at Hoofers and Simpson, we have now sold Chambers, King, young,Bouzza,Carlise
,Mahon,Spring

and replaced them with rubiish, we are in trouble , any business that makes decisions like they have need to be accountable and if we finish outside the top 2 then they must be made responsible.

Lets see if they invite a fans forum to answer any questions- fiver says they dont.

All those happy clappers out there open your eyes and engage your brain, things have gone on and are going on that just do not add up.

Lets not be naive we had a lucky season and since then most managers with that recors would be sacked.

Stop listening to the clubs spin and when you do remember what was said last week, 'to sell King we would have to tick 4 boxes and we dont tick one, so we are going back to fulham to tell them leave King alone'.

We ahve recieved 3.75m for King after Forest recieve their payment......come on this is crazy especially when we are joint second.

If anyone things we are in a good postion on and off the field they are blinkered and its a shame Leavesden hospital has closed down

I don't have a problem with MK moving on. As plenty of posters have already said, his heart wasn't here so it was right to let him go, (even talking up the price which might have been good business?)

However I do feel cheated like so many fans who pay their season ticket money and expect to get proper value. Selling your best player again mid-season is not best value.

The point that really gets me is that after just six months from the Prem we can be in such disarray as a club.

Angry confrontations at the AGM, where GS is caught out trying to slip £1/2m bonus payment through an 'Employee Benefit Scheme' for one employee. The half truths and spin from his sidekick Ashton over the ground re- development as well as the disgraceful staff turnover (all masked with compromise agreements)The constant war with the WO, for whom I'm very grateful for their accurate reporting of events. The mysterious sacking of the Russo's after they sank £m's into the club.

As for AB, I'm not his greatest fan. To me he's run out of ideas and is like a hare caught in headlights. Everything he does makes no more sense to me from his mutterings and spin, his tactics or lack of, his team selection and substitutions.

So far this month the club hs lost 2 key staff members, the Chief Scout, the Assistant Manager, and their star striker.

It all adds up to an extra ordinary level of dissatisfaction with OUR club.

King wanted to go, said so on Sky Sports so what can AB do? Personnally I don't see why he is so desperate to leave right now. He could have stayed and maybe we would go up, if not leave in the summer.

And you all have to realise statements get made for business and managerial reasons. AB statng MK isn't going may have persuaded MK to stay as he would have felt wanted. And making a statement like that can up a price.

Dissapointed to see him go but that's life. Fingers crossed CJ is a good signing, if not we have the option of saying no thanks and looking else where so that is good business.

PS the total lack of respect from some of you towards the man who took us to the prem when we were supposed to come 24th astounds me.

Priskin Never gets stuck in, rarely scores. Not a crowd favourite so lets play him.

Steve Kabba. Um!!
Gareth Williams
Will Hoskins
Moses Ashikodi
Nathan Ellington. How many goals has he scored so far?
Douglas Rinaldi

We could bring back McNamee he's as good if no better than most of the ones listed.
Clarke Carlisle why did we let him go?
I liked Springy.Remember his goal at Palace.

Manager in, new players, short term success, bad spell, sack the manager and the cycle repeats itself.

And then again, only on loan.

I read on this board that we were interested in Earnshaw he now looks favourite to rejoin Cardiff.

The board are not really giving us the fans the message for ambition and a return to the premiership. We are now even more toothless up front.

So Simpson didn't want him to go either? So it's all down to King by the looks of it & I can understand his reason why. I think, just as a few posters have mentioned already, that player power is so powerful these days. I'll draw your attention to Lassana Diarra who today left Arsenal whom he only joined from Chelsea at the start of the season. Not too loyal either, especially as he's already quoted as saying that he'd accept a move to a big club if it was forthcoming!! There is a lot of speculation about me leaving Watford, but I just get with it. The newspapers are always in the changing room so everyone reads them. They are always a good source of banter. I am under contract here and have a job to do. I'm happy - we are top of the league. I could do with scoring a few more goals though. I have 11 so far this season.

Only £1.4M profit for King, Mid Table by March says...

Marlon was 50/50 on moving to Fulham, the loss at Preston last weekend put more doubt in his mind, he has been **** off at the tactics for weeks, but the final straw that made him want a move came after Tuesday when Hoofroyd sacked Chief Scout, Marlon saw this as more turmoil, Russo's, Simpson's bonus, etc etc, team thrown away 8 point lead, I think had we won last weekend against bottom team, and no sacking he would still be here. So £5M minus Forests sell on of £1.25M is £3.75 left over. Boothroyd will get a percentage of that fee (like Newell at Luton) of the difference between what we paid for him to what we sold him, probably 2.5%, £112K, plus Chairman and Chief exec will cream some cash, so in total another £350k off, so now down to £3.4M, minus the £2M we will have to pay for Collins (not interested in playing for Watford in the PREM let alone championship), we are left with £1.4M and another Donkey !!!!

Unbelievable ... I really don't know if I have anything new to add to all the comments above. But I felt I had to post my disbelief, fury, disappointment anyway. We here tyhat King was unhappy from some quarters, but I don't care how unhappy he was, he was happy to sign an extension to his contract comparatively recently and as such has a duty to help us win promotion back to the premier league. If it is not King wanting away (and the club wrongly capitulating) then the board should be shot for brokering a deal when the only replacement is a below-average journeyman like Collins John, who has already turned down a move to us is the past so is hardly motivated to do anything beyond pick up a fat pay cheque. And if Aidy has been overridden in this deal and the board has pulled rank, don't be surprised to see him accept the next big offer which comes his way. What's the point in having an ambitious manager if you don't back up his ambition by securing the futures of your best players. He could be forgiven for feeling betrayed. On the other hand if he was party to this and sanctioned the sale then I seriously question his motivation ... unless he has a big signing coup up his sleeve on the back of the 5m income!! And won't we all look daft if that happens??

Lets not go pointing fingers. I share the concern with CJ motivation but is goal record in the prem is 20 goals in 40 odd matches, i think. Just has not played recently. Remember where most of this started. With Helguson being transferred on the eve of the new season (or near to). I am surprised by the timing of the move but just over a year left on his contract, £5m is a good deal. I do not see this as a good move for Marlon though

Guys enough is enough lets top line some FACT that has gone on over the last 3 years

FACT- helguson' goals saved us from relegation to Div 1

FACT-Boothroyd sold him

FACT-Parkin was Boothroyd' first choice transfer target and King was his second, hence he got lucky.

FACT- Foster, Mahon, Chambers, Carlisle,Young,King, Bouazza and Spring all played in our promotion winning side

FACT- they have all been sold on or have had issues with the club (excuse Foster from that Hoofers had no way of keeping him)

FACT-we have generated 19m in transfer dealings plus Sky money plus the parachute money and the sale of the youth player to Villa (rough guess of around 45m injected into the club)

FACT- Simpson and Hoofer give themselves a huge bonus after we are relegated from the Prem and win only 5 games!!!!!

FACT- Our squad is riddled with high earners, Stewart,Ellington,Fr
ancis,Mcanuff,Willia
mson,

FACT -Hoofers and Simpson sanctioned the following signings,Priskin,Ell
ington,Hoskins,Ashek
odi,Mcanuff,Francis,
willimson,Stewart,Po
well Poom, the list goes on.

FACT-WE have just sole King after they promised he was not going anywhere and we need him for our promotion push

FACT- we cant win and home and our tactics never change

FACT we are in the SH!*

If you can argue against that then your are blinkered

Ask yourselves - do you think the likes of WBA would sell their star player if they wanted to be promoted? Every team in every division will start their season dreaming of getting promoted, why do WFC not have this ambition, I think they are duping their supporters. I also think that they have thown in the towel, 3 wins from 14, (relegation form)they are now expecting a mid-table finish so therefore sell all the silver and then give out some more fat bonuses. I feel insulted.

Vic, says...
8:34am Fri 18 Jan 08

It's the lies I can't handle.

I saw King interviewed on Sky and he said something to the effect that as soon as he knew of Fulham's interest, he wanted to go.

However, Boothroyd said on Saturday that the player did not want to leave, one of four reasons why he would not be going.

So, either King is lying because it was only after Saturday that he decided he was interested in Fulham (which seems unlikely, why would he suddenly change his mind), or Boothroyd is lying because he knew King wanted to go but told the fans the opposite.

Earlier on, Boothroyd had said King would not be going because "I don't want him to". Therefore, has he since changed his mind and decided he does want King to go, or was that a lie and does he actually have no control over which players leave the club?

If that is the case, then you have to question Ashton's words a couple of weeks ago which said the club "had no need to sell" and "did not want to sell". Again, either they changed their minds, or made those statements knowing them to be false.

Transfers happen. We all know football, that's how it goes.

But this very high-profile and much-debated move of the club's 'star' player has brought right into focus the way the senior staff at the club operate.

For a couple of weeks their choice of statement, their use of spin, their insistence that everything has to be positive has been right in the spotlight.

We have hung on their every word.

Now it is all over and we can look back on events.

For me, it isn't about the fee or whether Collins John is a good replacement.

It is totally about what we have been told, by whom and when.

The club's senior staff are very well paid because they have to manage our expectations, provide us with an honest appraisal of club matters and to ensure everything the club does is in the best interests of Watford FC.

And on those areas, I believe the senior staff at the club have failed.

It's not the first time, but on this occasion it's on a huge piece of club business which is very emotionally charged and sits at the very heart of our bid to be successful and possibly return to the Premiership.

Perhaps now, the mismmanagement at the club that many posters on here have lamented for some time will become more apparent and obvious to others who have chosen to turn a blind eye.

It cannot be allowed to carry on.

Seems to me that it doesn't matter what Aidy wanted, if King had had his head turned then it's probably best that he went rather than become even more dispirited. More important is can John/Ellington be an equal/better replacement and what the jake are we doing about a centre half and a holding midfielder. How about hijacking the Eugo Ehiogu/Sheff Utd talks and I see Lennon is unsettled and after a move to the champoinship. Experienced campaigners are whats needed to get us back on track mixed with the exciting youth talent that we've got already.

yellow - thanks for descending to name calling. I think that says a lot. The best way to settle an argument is always to resort to a bit of name calling.

I am well aware of what negotiating is - but thanks for reminding me.

When you negotiated that arrangement you outline, were you representing an organisation which takes money from thousands of customers each week?

And did you then announce your position to those thousands of people?

And was the matter you were negotiating one that is close to the heart of those thousands of people?

And then, when you decided to accept less than you originally quoted, did you cunningly hope that the blame would land at someone's else door (ie, King)?

Negotiating, bartering, bidding, hawking - call it what you like. We know it goes on.

But if you're going to take part in it, don't come out in advance and make such unconditional and unequivocal statements about your position.

Because, when you do and then you later U-turn, you look like a liar, a fool or a bith of both.

Marlon's Knee, Rickmansworth says...
10:46am Fri 18 Jan 08

£5m is the most we'll ever get for King and I think is decent business. He hasn't been up for it, looks like he's lost his pace since the knee injury and several goals have been from pens. All the "we won't sell talk" is merely negotiation tactics to drive up the price. And if you're Marlon with a dodgy knee age 27 knowing that this could be your only chance why not take the chance to set yourself and your family up for life? What if he stayed and his knee went again in March? Opportunity to exploit desperate Fulham lost forever...

Bigger issue is how we re-invest the money in a replacement...Boothy has a "mixed" record in the transfer market to say the least...however, he's earnt the money to spend....would a Lewington team with Dyche and Ardley ever have got near being promoted in 2006? Short memories of whee we were heading in April 2005...

Am I the only one sick and tired of reading ill-thought garbage concerning players and 'setting themselves up for life'. It's often trotted out by brain-dead former players and means nothing. If, at Watford, Marlon was earning in a WEEK what most of us earn in a YEAR then in one year he would have earnt more than most of us will in our ENTIRE lifetimes. Don't fall for this rubbish. They get paid bundles at this level. The reality is they want even more. I am not criticising this - it is a free-market after all, but the bleating sheep who come out with rubbish like 'who can blame him for setting himself up for life' seem blind to the fact thay they can do that playing for a club like ours! Put it in persective. Please.

Another few million in the bank, good business for a player that wanted out (and we don't know the ins and out of his contract so could have gone for less in the summer). A few years ago (which many ppl seem to have forgotten) we were in financial melt down. Even once we turned the corner we were still losing money so this combined with the other incomes of the past 2 years will help to safeguard the clubs future.

I really believe this could have an 'Henry' effect as the team will have to blood new faces and not play everything through MK when the game isn't going well.

I really worry for the club at the moment because I believe we have the worst fans in the division (a reason for MK Leaving?!). We create a negative atmosphere, we subject the team top all sorts of abuse and we give every away team a massive lift....if things aren't going to plan that is! We have 19 games left to win promotion, getting on ppls backs will ensure another year in this division. Against Charlton I for one will clap, cheer and sing louder than before. COME ON U 'ORNS!!!! ps The Duke to score 2 i reckon!

Dom, London says...
11:55am Fri 18 Jan 08

Marlon's knee: It's got nothing to do with earning almost double the money. My point is that he is already set up for life by playing ONE YEAR FOR US. Next you'll be trooting out the other cliche that 'players only have a short career'. Boo hoo. How many of us have to retrain these day? Quite a lot. How many of us have the luxury that comes with being a higher tier pro-footballer? Not many.

I am not begrudging them what they earn, as I have already stated. What really makes me annoyed is the mindless drivel about setting themselves up for life, yadda yadda, when the are ALREADY.

Also, do you not think they are insured against loss of earnings relating to career threatening injury??

If you want to swallow that nonsense, it's your choice. But it is self justifying nonsense all the same.

Marlon's Knee, Rickmansworth says...
12:20pm Fri 18 Jan 08

Dom - I agree it's detached from reality of day to day life, and I'm not pleased about all the money sloshing around the game (blame Sky's monopoly that they can't lose - one to discuss another day...) and yes, all footballers are WAY overpaid...but that's the world we're in...

If you were Marlon you'd be taking all you could get right now...yes, life's unfair, we're not all pro footballers! But I'm sure in his position I'd do the same...I'm sure most of the players at WFC could set themseleves up earning £5k per week for a few years if they had the nous...and I'm also sure they'd jump at £40k per week given the chance...

Why would you stay if you were Marlon? You spend most games looking up to the heavens for the ball, you can almost double your pay risk free for three years...take it and run

As for insurance, think you'll find that insuring a £6m wage packet over three years if you've already got a dodgy knee wont' come cheap...

If you asked everyone on this forum if they'd take a risk free doubling of their salary for the next three years for doing exactly the same job 20 miles down the road what would they all say?

I used to follow Man U up & down the country however One day I realised that really true football supporters of all clubs need to wake up and turn there back on the professional game by going to watch real football, football the way it should be played.

Semi-Pro football where players are still in touch with the real world.

The players don`t look to get each booked, the tackles are firm but fair and footballers give there all every game but most importantly they play because they love the game as much as those who turn up to watch them.

I've followed Watford since 1969 but have never felt so without hope for the Club's future and so betrayed as now. Signing Collins John on loan is the ultimate farce given what's gone before. GET OUT NOW BOOTHROYD, you've made Watford a laughing stock, just read the Fulham FC messageboards, even they call Boothroyd 'a mug'! I now question what Messrs Simpson and Ashton's TRUE agendas are - asset stripping would appear to be the Club's policy. We've turned into some sort of feeder club for Fulham. Bravo to Oli Phillips for his great article spelling out how it REALLY is and what the WO sports journalists are up against. My faith in Watford is seriously on the wane; I don't trust any of the Watford FC officials.Do I really want to renew family season tickets parallel with paying for the privilege of being treated with such contempt? I really hope that we, the fans, can make ourselves heard tomorrow. Always remembering that there are genuine grafters within our team who fully deserve our support - Lee, Doyley, Smith - on reflection, those brought up the 'old' Watford way, courtesy of Nigel Gibbs and co. Please come home, Graham Taylor, and sort this mess out!

Absolutely gutted Marlon is going in the light of everything that has been said recentely.Would like to thank him for everything he has done for the orns and wish him well. Also not too enthused by the idea of Collins |John arriving who just did not want to play for us so why will he now? Having said all that it is very important now for all Watford fans to get behind Ady and the boardroom and especially the team. Even 9 points clear we were never seriously going to romp this league, and it will finish after 46 games, not 20 odd.So lets all get behind the team, if it doesnt work out by all means have a **** good moan at the end of the season but not now, the team needs us now more than ever.

Watford fans myarse ! Growup, King wanted to go, so good riddance. Loved him when he was here but as the saying goe's "break a leg Marlon" Now we move on and get behind the team as true Watford fans should. Come on, were Watford, not AFC, CFC or MUFC. Following the horn's is an emotional rollercoaster ride.Think back to the last 10 or so years, relegation from 1st div, 2nd div champs, play-off winners, relegation from premier, play-off winners again, relegation, again. Cup semi finals, twice, etc etc.And all through that an average away fan base of over 10% of our average home crowd. THATS WHAT FOLLOWING WATFORD IS ABOUT. pLAYERS GO, WE STAY LOYAL!

Twenty four hours on and i still feel angry and let down.
I'm still going to boycott tomorrow's match. I hope some of you do as well. Don't tell me this is wrong as sometimes you have to make a stand!!

Can I ask what exactly those of you who say you will boo are going to be booing about? A board that has transforemed the club? A manager who has transformed the club? Or some players, who granted some of them have not been as good as we would have liked but as long as they give 100% why boo them?

Show your support. Or if you boo and protest and moan and whinge etc then don't come along to the games at the end of the season when we might gain promotion and don't show up when we are in the prem and don't run around singing Boothroyds name because you are fickle and change your minds way too quickly.

Marlon wanted out and has gone. Lets get behind our other 8 strikers and maybe with some game time and confidence they will get us the goals we need.

Marlon went for the money! lets hope Fulham get relegated and the Hornets are in the PL next season.
Lets face it footy to a playeris all about money not loyalty - before us Marlon was in the wilderness!
Give Prisken, Ellington a real chance in the first team. bring in a winger with the money and get back to winning ways- Routledge from Tott would do nice

Still no official statements from WFC or FFc that Marlon's transfer has been completed; rumours of a failed medical etc.

Raises an interesting question: do you want Aidy to play him or not if it does fall thru?

Apparently Fulham are going to make a reduced offer with some of it conditional on number of appearances.

Let's get real. Marlon had gone mentally the moment he demanded the reansfer and everything has been done to keep him but to no avail. If he has failed his medical then Fulham do offre reduced terms, LET HIM GO he doesn't want to be at Watford and we don't need players like that in the dressing room. We all want to see someone playing their heart out for us not someone who has lost their heart to play
